I bought a Zappi which arrived today and contacted my electrician to let him know we decided to go with that over a Wallbox. He said that he did some research and we will have to have a separate consumer unit added to drive the charger, due to the need for a surge protection device. Quoted an additional £95 on top of the £310 original quote.

Is that correct, that it has to go through a separate consumer unit?

Also, does £405 seem reasonable for getting an EV charger installed, £95 of that being the CU?

Myenergi have added extra protection to be fitted with a Zappi installation.
It has it all built in but they won't go out to warranty repairs with it.

I don’t think there is anything that says you have to have a separate CU BUT the existing CU may not be up to the job I.e a requirement for the surge protection, specific types of breakers etc. the price seems acceptable as with a unit that isn’t as dear as zappi I paid £1k all in.

A new CU made me much happier - they split the tails on the meter and the whole load of the car bypasses the existing CU (I have one of the ones in a specific window that is plastic urgh). The little CUs are like the tiny ones you have in a garage - my advice - go for it!

Fitting an additional surge protection device will require at least another spare 'way' in the CU and depending on the specific SPD may require 2 'ways' (1 for an MCB if not built in to the SPD). Axiom SPD only requires 1 way but not resettable in case of over current but at £20 not a bad trade off.
