battery

An electric battery is a source of electric power consisting of one or more electrochemical cells with external connections for powering electrical devices.
When a battery is supplying power, its positive terminal is the cathode and its negative terminal is the anode. The terminal marked negative is the source of electrons that will flow through an external electric circuit to the positive terminal. When a battery is connected to an external electric load, a redox reaction converts high-energy reactants to lower-energy products, and the free-energy difference is delivered to the external circuit as electrical energy. Historically the term "battery" specifically referred to a device composed of multiple cells; however, the usage has evolved to include devices composed of a single cell.Primary (single-use or "disposable") batteries are used once and discarded, as the electrode materials are irreversibly changed during discharge; a common example is the alkaline battery used for flashlights and a multitude of portable electronic devices. Secondary (rechargeable) batteries can be discharged and recharged multiple times using an applied electric current; the original composition of the electrodes can be restored by reverse current. Examples include the lead-acid batteries used in vehicles and lithium-ion batteries used for portable electronics such as laptops and mobile phones.
Batteries come in many shapes and sizes, from miniature cells used to power hearing aids and wristwatches to, at the largest extreme, huge battery banks the size of rooms that provide standby or emergency power for telephone exchanges and computer data centers.
Batteries have much lower specific energy (energy per unit mass) than common fuels such as gasoline. In automobiles, this is somewhat offset by the higher efficiency of electric motors in converting electrical energy to mechanical work, compared to combustion engines.

Battery equalisation on ZSEV Trophy LR

We have a ZS EV Trophy LR. We normally charge it (on a 7kW home charger) to 80%, taking it up to 100% when we have a long journey coming. We've had the car since October and have never seen it equalise the battery pack. Our previous ZSEV did this every time you charged to 100% if you left it to...

MG ZS EV MK2 - LFP (standard range) - Battery SOH Theory

I've got a theory that I would like to test. The theory is: in the Mk2 ZS EV with LFP battery (standard range), the battery State of Health (SOH) reported by the car is a fudge, that is nothing other than a count-down timer, that started running when the battery pack was manufactured, and...

    SOH after warranty period

Is it stated in the warranties what the minimum SOH is guaranteed to be at the end of the warranty period for the MG4? Anybody know if it differs for SR and LR to allow for the different battery chemistries?

    Battery isolation - post accident

Hello I have a MG5, I am also looking to buy an accident damaged MG5 to use as donor parts to convert a classic car. The question is I assume post accident some battery disconnect would have happened, where is this? I would like to check the accident damaged car before complete dismantelling...

Charging 12v battery using a V2L lead connected to the same car?

There are a few threads on here about MG4 12v battery failures that have caused numerous issues. I park my car well away from any plug that I could use for a battery charger so I am wondering if I could use my V2L cable connected to my car to attach a battery charger to charge my 12v battery...

    Lithium NMC VS LIFEPO4

So apparently the standard range MG4 uses LFP and long range versions use NMC. Having read through some articles such as the one below, it appears LFP is the superior battery, Should we be concerned about long range models using NMC ? LITHIUM NMC VS LIFEPO4 – HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST ONE FOR...

    Preheating Battery Importance

I've seen a few people mention the preheat of the battery, especially if its below 10C. I've never really thought about how important this is until stumbling across this video that was recently uploaded. For those not wanting to watch, the Tesla M3 has 35% of battery when pulling into the...

    Battery discharge when idle?

I was stunned to read in the Tesla 3 Owner's Manual that the battery can lose charge at the rate of 1% every day! Efficiency and Battery Heating

Question I have from looking at forums from people discussing how to increase their miles per kwh. Is it more cost efficient (less energy used in total) to just drive away cold (as long as you don't need the distance) rather than heating battery before driving each time? Do you end up using...

    Battery Heating

TL;DR How should battery heating be used? Strategies for pre-heating the traction battery were hinted at on last night's podcast but I feel more confused than before. I'm posting this on the MG4 thread but I daresay strategies apply equally well to the ZS mk2 and 5 too. I'll throw a few...

PHEV - Key Fob not working after battery replacement

I’ve just replaced the key fob battery but it’s not working. The battery (tested with my meter and is the correct voltage - i.e. not flat) is in the correct way round, there‘s been nothing damaged within the key, and the spare key works fine (so it’s not the car). If it needs re-pairing, does...
