Can the MG ZS EV use Tesla chargers?

I’m on the fence a bit. It’s a major selling point for Tesla cars so i will be surprised if it happens soon entirely. You also pay indirectly for the exclusivity of superchargers when buying a Tesla so to have that taken away and potentially have to queue to use a stall would be a big negative. That said, it doesn’t seem completely acceptable to have a tier type system where one model sits above others. The real answer is for the general infrastructure to get it’s act together and provide a service that is equal to or better than what Tesla offer - complete with associated software for seamless payment and travel planning all linked to the car and users account. Tesla have done it so it can be done.

Perhaps this should have it's own thread but Grideserve last night have announced more new plans for hubs and motorway services.

Sorry, a bit late to the party on this news ?.
Is it FACT that the Tesla units are or will be open to other cars ?.
If so, I can understand the frustration this could cause when you roll up to charge your Tesla and the slots are full of other cars !.
It must be one of biggest reasons why a person would choose a Tesla in the first place.
Their charging infrastructure is miles ahead of anything close to what we are currently subjected too.
If this comes off and selflessly I hope it does, you have to feel a little “Sold Down The River” after buying a Tesla, I feel.
It does benefit ALL electric car owners though !.
Agree.

I think it's just a possibility (maybe even a figment of a journo's mind). I asked the question to Cocijo as he is a Tesla owner and it would be interesting to hear their thoughts.

Some think if Elon charges Ionity like prices to non-Tesla owners then that may placate the Tesla owners. Doubt it myself but interesting to get others thoughts.

yes - i read that gridserve article. Very positive.
I didn’t see any costs for the consumer. I’ve always been a little concerned in a model that charges between 5 and 12 times the cost of home charging if you charge using the travel infrastructure.
I guess the majority of EV owners will hardly ever use a public charger?
While there are still free and much cheaper chargers available we seem to be moving towards a high cost model which can make it quite expensive to use if you’re on a journey.(I have seen 61p/kwh - at that a 30kwh top up in a ZS would cost £18 that would give you about 100miles range - which is actually dearer than an economical diesel car). I know that this is an exceptional cost but I think prices will creep up - changes to VAT have also seen to this.
I suppose all this development has to be paid for and it will be great if we get to the point where the infrastructure supports EV travel better - there will then be a debate about costs! Perhaps supermarket charging will be cheaper - just like petrol now in comparison to motorway prices.

Although I personally never considered the convenience of the Tesla network, mainly due to the fact I only travel locally most of the time, it certainly could be another reason for not buying a Tesla if you were comparing longer range EVs.

With all the brilliant work that the likes of Gridserve are doing to improve the charging infrastructure to aid long distance travelling, maybe the team at Tesla thinks now is the right time to take a slice of that cake also.
The Gridserve model and idea is absolutely brilliant and is much needed.
But, it still has to grow its coverage.
The Tesla units in the other hand, are already in place and could be pulling in cash at the flick of a switch almost.
Tesla prides itself of being in front of the competition and do a really good job at this in my book.
Opening up the chargers to other users could throw a small spanner ( 10mm ) into the long term expansion plans of any of competition.
Folks just need to charge, they arn’t bothered who’s name is on the unit !.
Just like that stuff they call “Petrol ?”.
When you need it, you need it !.
I feel that IF Tesla DOES decide to open up their charging network to other users, then there WILL a premium price to pay for none Tesla owners.
To be honest, I think you have to except that really.
Speaking purely for myself here, 99.9% of my charging requirements are done using cheaper off peak electric at home.
If I have to pay a premium price when I roll up to a Tesla charger, that is almost certainly going to work when I arrive, then so be it !.
That small increased cost is nothing given my usage pattern.
This not the case for everybody I understand that.
Increasing the coverage of chargers almost overnight by Tesla opening up their units, has to be fantastic news for all EV owners.
Motorway service centre petrol station almost ALWAYS charge more for their fuel prices.
Cheaper at your local supermarket of course, but hey ho - we are not at the supermarket are we !.

Don’t forget that Tesla would also need to significantly increase their customer support to support all makes if opened up and allow none Tesla owners to open an account. just because the chargers work doesn’t always mean the cars take a charge.
i could be wrong but I don’t think Teslas business model creates a great deal of revenue from supercharging costs to owners - after taking into acount the significant investment in superchargers.
Many owners get free supercharging for life also. I think the main reason was as a massive selling point for those concerned with poor charging infrastructure. Tesla also use it to stop Teslas charging on superchargers if they have any concerns - e.g. written off in an incident and rebuilt.
it will be interesting to see how it develops. Other manufacturers would give their right arm for a Tesla supercharging network! Especially the high-end makes like Porsche.

And yet this is a pleasant surprise. According to the Gridserve article it is 30p at an electric hub and 24p at a service area. So "filling up" at a motorway services could be cheaper than going off route to an Instavolt, Osprey etc unlike with fossil fuels

The OP was just asking nicely about using a Tesla charger. I also run a Tesla. Are you referring to cables? My home wallbox (podpoint) charges both my Tesla and my MGZS. MG provided a granny and I purchased a type 2 cable. My Tesla uses a type 2 connection so does my MG. I’m not sure what points you are trying to make here - no-one in the MG community is asking you to change your chargers, they’re just trying to find out more about using different chargers. The MG uses a type 2 and CCS connector - the same as my Tesla.
Hi. What is a type 2 cable please and a granny 😆? I’m very new to electric vehicles and I have an MG. Trying to charge my car with a neighbours Tesla charger. It plugs in fine but will not charge. Thank you.

The type2 cable is the one that plugs into the front of the car and a 'fast' like Pod Point at a supermarket. The 'granny' lead should have come with the car and plugs into a 13A plug socket. But make sure it is a nice new socket as they draw 10A for hours.
The Tesla charger should be ok if it fits.

Some Tesla AC "chargers" (usually public ones but I think some domestic ones too) can be set to "Tesla only" mode.

The other thing is that Teslas have their own handshaking, and they try that protocol first. Only if that fails after some time does it try standard protocol. So sometimes it takes up to 2 minutes for a non-Tesla vehicle to charge from a Tesla "charger". Did you leave it connected long enough?

ISTR someone mentioning a dip switch inside the charger to change from Tesla only to any car.

The following may not work on all models of Telsa destination "charger".

Hi Guys trying to read comments to solve my Tesla Gen 3 wall charger not charging my 2020 MG ZS EV. I tried all AMPS setting from 8ams - 28 amps. did not work :(. Set all vehicles option.
I upgraded tesla firmware to latest 21.36.5 still no luck.

If the dip switches are for the earthing arrangement of your incoming mains supply should you really change them?
I'm fairly certain the diagram shows DIP No 1 being changed, this is incorrect as indeed this is related to the earthing of the charger. However, the No 2 DIP has nothing to do with the earthing of the machine, it just changes it's protocol to allow non-Tesla's to charge.

The Gen 3 did not have any switches instead the software has some options.

Got this acknowledgement today. I am hoping some great news next month :)
Thanks Tesla

HI ,

Thank you for contacting Tesla Support.

Tesla Gen 3 Wall Connectors are designed to allow charging across any Type 2 compatible electric vehicle. We are aware of some reports that certain vehicle brands, such as yours, experience intermittent and/or permanent charging issues. Our engineers are currently working with each OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) to develop a firmware upgrade to resolve these issues. The firmware upgrade is expected to rollout in March, 2022.

I sincerely apologize for any inconveniences this may cause.

Kind regards,

In order to access the dipswitch, you will need a T10 Torx driver to remove the screw at the bottom of the outer cover. And then a T20 security pin Torx driver to remove the six screws on the sealingcover
Yep, we're heard many similar instances over here, once dipswitch changed all good. 👍🔋
