Every so often I have problems getting the car to start charging. Usually it eventually plays ball but today I have tried numerous times in the app and in the car. It just keep coming up with a message "failed".

Has anyone else experienced this? I'm wondering if it could be when it's hot.

Thanks. The car is less than a year old, so that's not good if it is! I guess I will have to take to garage for them to have a look.

Are you able to dc charge?

Is your onboard charger 3 phase? The early Trophys were but I believe the later ones went single phase. Count the pins in the charging socket.

i assume you are talking about AC charging, hence @aitch's question.

Have you tried starting the charge from the infotainment screen?

What is you charging setup? ie granny charging, home EVSE (tethered/untethered), public AC etc.

Do you have a schedule set? What is your electricity tariff?

Sorry for the questions but the problem could be in a number of places

Have you tried the negative cable off the battery for 10/15mins trick? That sometimes resets the system and gets things working again. Certainly worked for me when mine refused to connect a while ago.

I had this problem and found that the charging cable was at fault in hot weather. I have replaced the charge cable and no further problems.

I've had a Zappi charger for a few weeks now and have been unable to charge my MG4. I recently had solar panels and batteries installed and am on Octopus Go. I think I've pretty much tried everything. It doesn't matter whether I use the charger or the app, nothing works. Sometimes it connects and all systems go for 5 seconds and then it disconnects. I scheduled it for 12.30am a few nights ago, to charge for 5 hours. I could hear it constantly trying to connect BEFORE that time, every few minutes (it's on the outside bedroom wall). I got up at 12.40 (am) and unplugged it.
More advice appreciated.

Do you know anyone else with an electric car , invite them over to start a charge and try out theirs, using both immediate and scheduled charging . From the results you should be able to eliminate some of the apparent problems.

Which model of MG4 have you got and has it got a rear wiper?

The reason I ask is that there seems to be a batch of earlier cars with the LR battery that have a problem with the CCU which stops them being able to charge on AC but will charge on DC.

Hi I have the same problem, unable to charge my MG 4. Rang service and all they said was to contact MG Assist who would locat the fault and bring the car into the dealer and give me a courtesy car for 72 hours. This was not the case, MG Assist asked me to drive to a fast charger and see if that would charge the car. Well contected the DC charger tapped my debit card and waited. The dail went up to the 75kw mark, then went back down to zero in the space of 20 seconds, and said charge complet charged me £0.13. Rang MG service back who said ring MG Assist (it was a Saturday and they close at mid-day). Rang MG Assist, and because I had 48% charge on my car they would not come out until I had at least 5%.
Rang MG spoke with the manager, they had no appointments until June to look at the car. Told him I was not happy, need my car to get to and from work. He is ringing me on Monday after he speakes with service.
Also after I will be speaking with the fianance company as it is a joke having to wait until June.

Ian

Have a look at post #6 and try that, a local garage should have an OBD reader which could clear any fault codes, may work ???
MG assist will not come out until its at 5% , shameful . Is it the same for petrol/hybrid versions , you need to be down to the last 2 litres of fuel?

@Red One, as @Ian Key asked in the quoted post, what model of MG4 have you got and does it have a rear wiper?

That will guide the direction of advice.

Are there any other faults indicated on the driver's display?

[When my Trophy failed to charge on AC and DC the car was showing a low voltage battery charging circuit fault. Corrected by connecting a booster to the LV battery. That cured the problem. @OriginalBigAl's #6 suggestion may have the same effect of resetting modules.]

Trophy, 2023, no wiper.

And I had no issues with my Podpoint charger.

@lizp, so the process is to localise the issue and hopefully eliminate a CCU problem.

Can you charge outside of the Octopus Go hours by setting the zappi to ignore schedule restrictions?

Can you charge using a granny charger or a supermarket charger?

Do you have a schedule set in the app or in the car? If so remove them/it.

No cannot charge at any time. No schedule set on the car. I tried charging at Waitrose once, didn't work. But will try again somewhere else to verify.

I posted on this problem a couple of weeks ago and MG have been impossible. ( MG4 trophy without rear wiper) I had to call out MG assist as it wasn’t charging AC or DC. MG Assist /AA towed it from Oxon to Portsmouthfor some reason gave me 72 hours of rental car kept the car for more than a week now and say it’s charging fine( it’s an intermittent t issue sometimes yes it will charge and some times not at all. They said they did all their tests and nothing showed up. I asked them 2 days ago to just return the car ( I’ve been without for 6 days. ) Agter several interventions by the dealer MG assist offered £50 if I kept the receipts for me to go get it. As a disabled driver this is almost impossible as I have no other driver or car and taxis want about £200 from my location.

I have begun a small claims court battle today filing locally but they will of course not recompense for the hours nor aggravation I have had. Further my holiday plans have had to be cancelled and I am stuck in a very rural village without transport.

Buy another car all of you who are still trying to decide. All this is happening with less than 1700 miles on the clock.
