I can confirm the water intake bit. Age 17, going through a ford too fast and the engine stopped in an instant.

Astonishingly, given the conrod is connected by a circle at both ends so there can be no bending force, it bent the conrod by compression alone. Why nothing else went first I've no idea.

£35 quid and a few days solid work saw a lesson learnt very quickly.

I only went through significant flood water (standing water covering a road) once. There was already a car stranded in it, but I was feeling lucky. A bus was coming and obviously I couldn't go through past the stationary car until that had passed. Observing the bus, it didn't seem to bad so I went for it. I did what I'd been taught and kept the Golf to walking speed, trying to keep the revs up (as far as possible with the DSG, like an idiot I didn't think of switching it to manual) and envisaging the tailpipe not sucking in water like that.

It worked and I got through, but at the time I had no idea about the air intake/hydrolocking thing, nor the slightest clue where the Golf's air intake was. I did the right things for the wrong reasons I think.

It's quite funny watching the "cars versus floods" videos and seeing the incredulity in the comments when an EV sails through (literally). And the comment is always "no air intake", not "no tailpipe".

The real horrors in the "vehicles versus floods" videos are when a driver persistently tries to turn over the engine after it has hydrolocked. Leave it be and try to drain out the water and maybe you have a chance, but try to turn over the engine and you'll ruin it. The number of write-offs in those videos is tragic. Comments like "at 2 min 45 seconds you can hear the Merc's soul departing..."

I got a tow out of the ford, took the spark plugs out and the pushed the car in gear. But the damage was done as you could hear the middle of the conrod nicking the bottom of the cylinder.

It wasn't just the speed that did for me (about 10mph) but the length of 40ft or so gave plenty of time to fill the cylinders fully. Fortunately it was on the way to the pub and not the way back - I really would have regretted that.

There's a video somewhere made by a guy who rescued a saturated Zoe. It was his wife's car and it was caught, parked, by a flash flood when a river burst its banks. Sitting hip-deep in water for 12 hours did it no good at all, and the idiots in their snorkel-equipped Land Rovers speeding past sending up waves didn't exactly help. Nevertheless, when the flood water went down, he was able to get in the soaked car and drive it away without any error messages.

The insurance company were prepared to write the car off, as I suppose they were doing for all the ICE cars in the same position, but the YouTuber asked if he could have a go at restoring it. He was a professional EV technician with access to a workshop. The amount of work that went into drying that car out was phenomenal, and if it had all been done on a time-sheet I could well understand that writing the car off might have been preferable. But he did it, and kept the car for more than a year (at the insurance company's request) to ensure that there were no delayed issues. The motor, drive-train and so on were fine, all the seals had held. It was literally just getting it dry without letting mould set in.

I'm so depressed... the range of my car is only 1/4 mile, I can never charge anywhere, the car is now only worth 50p... why was I sucked into the hype???.. I have just been going around ICE dealers with my begging bowl to be allowed to have one again... ???

What a load of rubbish, even in the US.

The one thing that I might agree on is the F150 Lightning range and towing performance. But that's a stop-gap effort by Ford and completely irrelevant to most owners.

I think it is copycat behaviour. Damage the strange new electric thingy that the average person cannot afford. It is pretty mindless, like dropping litter and fly tipping, keying cars is a kind of feeble protest by the useless who don't want to contribute or cannot or feel everyone is against them.

Conspiracy requires competence and in my experience almost nobody has the competency to run a decent conspiracy, so what we often think is organised is just coincidence or confused copying.
