Flood water damage resulting in full battery replacement

Have had a similar problem car shut down in heavy rain about 3 months ago. MG didn't have a mechanic for 2 weeks plus to look at car and when finally did they saw water sitting in battery compartment after crack to under shield and said two of the three rubber bungs where missing. Suggested I go insurance as it wasn't covered under warranty as battery corroded. So I am now stuck between insurers and MG as both don't want to pay.

To update everyone else that's interested;

I received a call from the lease company last Thursday and was told that their independent check had suggested manufacturer fault and the car was then taken to MG headquarters where they carried out the required repair work. This was deemed to fall within my maintenance contact with the lease company and therefore it has been done at no cost to myself. I have since collected the car and now finally (after nearly 12 weeks!) have it back in full working order.

I'm trying to get more detail from the lease company on the actual damage and what was deemed to be the cause and then I will be making a formal complaint to the garage and directly to MG. After all the stress and upset they have caused, neither have even shown the decency of offering me an apology. Having now read several other bad reviews about the dealership (PAUL RIGBY MG REDDITCH), I would advise avoiding them at all costs.

Thankfully for myself, the nightmare appears to be over.

I'm so pleased this has been resolved for you. It's pretty rare to get stuff like this happen so it's great you stuck to your guns on this & didn't just roll over. I was a tech for many years & can tell you ALL manufacturers get the odd issue like this. It's the way it's handled by the dealers that can make all the difference as to how the manufacturer deals with it. On the face of it I suspect the dealer has little to no experience at dealing with an issue such as this. Anyway, happy motoring from now on. Thanks for posting back with the conclusion.

Hi we having the same problem as you they saying we hit something under the car and the cover is broken and water as got in side the car as broken down 4 times with battery shut off called out the AA 4 times know the car is complete dead we are getting a solicitor on to it as it’s not fit for purpose when we brought it we paid cash .

Hi. My MG ZS is i the garage at the moment. I went through a puddle in the rain nearly 4 weeks ago. It came up with an EMS fault. I pulled over, then the HV Battery shut down. The AA recovered it to an MG garage. I was told after 2 days that they could find no fault. They ran more tests and said there was water in the battery. Then it would not charge. I have now been told that part of the cover is missing, as is a bung which seals the battery. They want to charge me £720 to open up the battery as they now say that the damage stops it being a warranty job. I can't afford the £720, and am concerned that if I do pay it, it will lead to an even bigger bill. Any advice welcomed.

That is really rubbish, sorry to hear that.

I'm no expert on these situations, but can they be sure that this is not an MG manufacturing fault if they don't open it up?

I don't see why you should have to pay for an investigation to see if something is a warranty claim but I'm probably hopelessly naive on these matters.

I hope you get a good resolution, but I would be tempted to look up local EV garages (HEVRA) as they will no doubt be much more appropriate and reasonable if you aren't covered under warranty.

Hi. Have you managed to resolve this? I am going to be in the same situation. They have said that the bungs do not fall out easily, so it is classed as damage that I have done!
