From Wales to Qatar in an MG4

They missed a trick in not getting one of the 3 phase trophy that sneaked in, but if they have any sense they'll have something like this to plug into the mains in the industrial units that they mention:

My back of an envelope calculation makes it look that they only need 20 full charges to make the distance. Good luck to them, I think that their chances of success are greater than any British teams.

Pics on the twitter @StackH posted reveal the car is an SE (hopefully LR!)
Its one of the 22 plate cars, which was used by the media in August. So maybe the MG marketing team have something to do with it.

..... actually on the twitter feed, they have 2 stickered MG4's - one is a SR & the other is LR

.... "Nathaniel Cars is providing the MG4 car while Go Ev Cymru – a community interest company – will support the challenge."

From: Electric Car to Qatar – An electrifying 5,000-mile odyssey

Meet Morris, a brand new MG4 SE Long Range electric car. He’s one of the first MG4s in the UK and our loyal companion on this 5,000-mile trek to Qatar. Morris hasn’t been modified. He’s just like any other MG4. The only “extras” he has are all-weather tyres for those perilous mountain roads and challenging desert terrains.

Like any electric car, Morris’ range will vary depending on how he’s driven, but he’s capable of around 281 miles on a single charge. We’ll be planning our route meticulously and carrying specialist equipment for every charging socket along the way. Luckily, Morris will charge in just under nine hours from a standard home charger. With rapid charging, he can go from 10% to 80% in just 35 minutes!

We can’t wait to put Morris through his paces. Thanks to MG UK for letting him come along for the ride of his life, as well as all their technical support before and during the journey.

... which means it is indeed LA22WND - one of MG's press cars!

Typical Welsh. Taking a leak with them....

- one does wonder if its the simple green card challenge? (now we're non EU again?)- we missed the ferry in the late '70s from Santander to Portsmouth due this bit of insurance legesation - from recolection we had to wait for the post to arrive (4 days), to get home!

Have they mentioned if they are going to drive back, or is Morris going to be put on the slow boat home while the crew jet back?

... that was my thought also - I did wonder if they would fly it home, but the last time I looked, batteries larger than a mobile phone / computers were not allowed on mainstreem planes (how do F1 teams travel?). One would imagine that MG UK will have a plan to drop it onto one of the cargo ships circulating the globe - just remembering this from work experience, "shipping" a car accross the globe & back is a bureaucratic challenge (with 19 countries to deal with)!

There's a video about F1 logistics.
However, more than likely they probably recover it to a shipping port and ship it back to the UK.

Also cargo planes can take larger batteries than passenger planes. But its very expensive to fly any car cargo.

... it looks like everything is going well todate - they appear to also have a service vehicle (grey fiat Van) - but what caught my eye was the automatic chanageover from miles (UK) to Km as soon as they were in France..?

My current car does that (and adjusts the headlights accordingly) but I always assumed it was via the sat nav. They are driving an SE I think, so it can’t be that.
