It's pronounced Poo-KET. Or maybe Boo-KET. Shades of Hyacinth .
In 1981 I went to Singapore. Then there was Singapore, where we left the ship and stayed for a couple of days. Most cars were either EVs or hybrids running on their battery cycles, and the quiet, low-pollution streets were amazing.
Visited in 1980 after John Carter (Holiday TV presenter) suggested visiting whilst it was an unspoilt destination, never did make it back there again.Unfortunately it's not like it used to be.
But I guess there aren't many places that are.
Not sure what Singapore is like now, when I visited in 1980 it was somewhere you felt completely safe wandering around at night but somehow uncomfortable. The tour guides had to be government approved and appeared to be reading from the same script while travelling through areas, whereas the boat crews doing trips around the bay were a bit more forthcoming. Then there was Singapore, where we left the ship and stayed for a couple of days. Currently on a sun bed on a beach in the Maldives, coming home on Sunday. No cars here.
