MG4 Trophy Long Range 10,000 Mile SoH

Hi,

As I am approaching a year of ownership of my MG4 Trophy LR and have done over 10,000 miles including more 100% to 20% journeys than I had anticipated I decided to use the on board diagnostics and car scanner to check the battery State of Health. I am overdue a balance charge which may improve things but I got a reading of 99.8% SOH. As much as I should prefer to still be at 100% I think this result seems okay for a vehicle that was produced in 2023. Is this a typical result?

I mainly charge at home but DC fast charge on trips. On most weekdays I tend to do daily charges around 20% and try to stay below 70%. At weekends I find that long trips require full charges and sometimes a bit of DC fast charging. I have noticed that driving does little to warm the battery but charging especially fast charging helps raise temperature and efficiency.

Sounds like you've been doing everything right to me . Great result.
 
Congratulations on maintaining your batteries health. For a moment I pondered a few variables such as whether harsher winter conditions or my long trip to Manchester were to blame before deciding that it's unknowable and could even be variation in quality of cells within the packs. So any attempt to sift through difficult to quantify differences would be be of little or no benefit. I wonder if these results point to a general case of slow but inevitable decline. It certainly suggests things aren't bad at all.

Out of curiosity, and if you don't mind sharing, what are your charging habits and typical journey lengths?

I don't think one trip would cause any issues unless you left it at zero or 100% for a week. I wouldn't worry about your battery health, give it 6 months you never know it might not have moved.

I drive up and down the M1 (110 mile round trip) many times per week. My car is almost always charging as i only have a 2.4kW Ohme charger. I don't make much of an effort to preserve the battery however as i am doing quite a lot of miles the battery isn't really getting left at a high or very low state of charge for very long.

I am not a fan of this car and won't be taking any precautions with the battery like i did with my last Ioniq (which I tried to always keep between 20-80%) as there is no chance i will be buying it from the lease company (i wish i could give it them back). After over 4 years and 50,000 miles my Ioniq was still on 100% SOH.
 
@gary333 Thanks for the insights. I'm sorry to hear the MG4 doesn't suit you. I am very happy with mine especially with the current software sorting out the irritations of LKA. I'd like a heat pump on my next EV as winter range is more of a challenge and I have hobbies that require travel in winter.
 
I am changing my Trophy for a Kia EV3, the MG was class leading at the time but not any longer. Too many software issues and poor multimedia control, after 2.5 years I still have not figured out how to work the radio! Also the trade in value is awful. I'm leasing the next car, I know exactly what it will cost over 3 years. Bliss.

We have a 71 plate eNiro as well as my trophy, the Kia went in recently to have the BMS wiring harness fixed and they gave us a 25 plate Niro4 which we had for a week and did 400 miles in. This had its own software quirks, odd unrelated error/warning messages, interior build quality was better than the MG but not as good as the 71 plate. Being a 4 it had lots of toys but still had a bit of a clunky interface, I think the biggest negative for it was the comfort/drive, it was a bit crashy over bumps and the torque steer unpleasant. I've not driven the EV3 so hopefully that will be better.

As for leasing, I guess you are looking at £1-2k deposit plus £350-400 a month, so not not far off the 'loss' on an MG4, the difference being you pay for the depreciation monthly where as a chunk of mine happened when I purchased it, but my car costs perhaps £500 a year to run and after 3 years I still have a car.
