So does that mean you can plug a USB key with your music on into the back socket and your phone to provide Android/Apple auto/carplay into the front?

I've plugged my phone into the usb b port and a memory stick with a b-c adaptor and I can use android auto or listen to music from the front usb c port .
I'm not sure if I should be able to !!

yes the front usb c port will work with memory sticks and play music.
I do the same as above.

Yes it is ... iPhone 15 and later sold in the UK/EU has a USB C port. iPhones before that came with a Lightning port, apart from much older iPhones which had the original Apple port.
