Tesla Supercharger Issue MG5 LR

I've managed to update my 72plate FL trophy to work on the Tesla chargers 😃

I'd like to use this post for the following:
  1. Extend my thanks to the folk on this forum for uncovering this problem, finding the solution and documenting it with idiots guides. Very much appreciated.
  2. Give the middle finger to MG for not updating under warranty
  3. Give the middle finger to the dealers for their complete lack of understanding or outright lies. The two stories I got from two different dealers was: £140 but can't guarantee it would work, and £200 because we have to buy a licence from Tesla.
It took longer to queue at the Trafford centre for a test charge than it did updating the car...

One final query....I updated both CCU (for the sc072 12v update thing) and the EVCC. EVCC was spot on, CCU software update was spot on, but SIPPS showed that my car's CCU configuration file was more recent than on MG database (see photo)! I decided not to update the CCU config as didn't really know what I was playing with. There seems to be no change to the charging of my 12v. Has anyone come across this?

Thanks for all your help. Depending on the outcome of the CCU question I'll be looking to move my VNCI dongle on so drop me a PM if you want a second hand one.

There really ought to be somewhere that we can report that sort of nonsense.
There is, here!!!!

Many people will research before buying an MG, I for one wont be replacing our MG with another one in September, 2027, I'm heading to Kia, VW or Tesla when the time comes.

It gives the MG dealership network such a bad name.
The dealerships do have an uphill struggle with MG. The whole SAIC operation could be so much better with a little more 'give' in the systems and listening to their customer base.

I agree with you but, as this thread started 3 years ago and some people in the dealer network are still spouting lies, it is clear that no-one that can do something about the situation is reading here.
I do love my car but I will be quite wary of buying another MG.

I have already gone this route. I have to say that my local dealer Luscombe's in Leeds was excellent and I place no fault, blame or criticism with them. The cars I have had from them have been excellent too, but I found that the SAIC method of working with MG and I presume all other SAIC brands, maybe even all Chinese brands to be the fear factor. Do Chinese companies have the same perception of customer service as we have?

I agree with Gomev above here some of the problems is the back up from MG UK example being the Tesla SC updates around 18 months ago these for a very short time where to be done free of charge and MG uk where to pick up any bill and indeed my 5 FL 2022 was done free of charge by Chorley MG who I must say have been very good really, especially a lady called Lindsay who sorted out a warranty claim I had for my wheels.
She was very helpful.
if there’s is a problem with Chorley it the wait time for servicing which is often weeks ahead when you book in but I suppose that’s down to their number of sales and customers or shortage in the number of service staff. But when the cars go in they do a decent job with a sort of mini valet to boot.
So happy with my dealer and cars MG 4 and 5 FL
Les.

But MGUK is just the British arm of SAIC MG and following their rules.
Yes, indeed - but you can't explain all aspects of bad aftersales just by SAIC's rules.

Besides MGUK have a lot of local power:
  • They decide which models we get
  • They choose and restrict specification and standard equipment
  • They determine pricing and margin
  • They set the local rules for the UK warranty and claims
  • They provide customer services in the UK
And we are the #2 market globally, so they have influence with China.

Some dealers are just poor. As I said my dealer was superb but had their hands tied to the procedures laid down to them by MG. e.g. can I please have permission to do this fix... etc.

Some of that will be MG UK rules, some will be China. MG UK are responsible for the UK dealer network quality.

During the 1st Service for my 74 FL this month was shown an August 24 MG bulletin by the Beaconsfield dealer saying Mg5 would not work with Tesla only MG4. Insisted on the EVCC update for Tesla support as you guys mention also a multimedia update to fix the random crashes. It now works finally at Tesla Earley no more ‘Abnormal Electrical Grid’ errors and the R17 infotainment update seems to make that stable with CarPlay.

No MG and as far as I know any other make will not work on Tesla only charge points, these are exclusive to Tesla cars, but the open to all Tesla SC will work with many makes including MG that have the correct equipment installed and are up to date.

I think the OP was claiming MG are saying that only the MG4 is compatible with the superchargers rather than then software update would make it work on the ones that are Tesla only...

My MG dealer said exactly the same to me, after they charged me for the update and it didn't work (they updated the CCU instead of the eVCC).

I had to go though head office to get a refund and rven then they were adament only the MG4 was compatible.

I’m sorry guys to the best of my knowledge only Tesla vehicles can use Tesla only SC full stop.
The MG4 all models could always use Tesla open to all as can all current models, the problems where confined to the MGZS EV
And the MG5 no other full BEV models from MG have been effected.

I think there is some confusion in the conversation here.

The original op was saying that they had the update to let them use their car on the Tesla superchargers open to all, like the MG4 can.

The fact that only Teslas can use the Tesla-only superchargers is true but wasn't what was being discussed as far as I can see.

Yes to clarify it was the MG 5 EVCC software fix with the 1st service I had to allow use of the 'open to all' Tesla SC networks available via the Tesla App for a non-Tesla EV.

However before I got the EVCC fix the dealer went onto his computer and went into the MG5 section pulled up a document from MG dated Aug 24 which explicitly stated that Tesla SC 'open to all' is only available to MG4 and he also mentioned he thought possibly later models like the IM6. He did concede that he had people ask for a fix and it may or may not work....

The bottom line is that dealers are still being fed this garbage from MG UK.
