What Are You Drinking Tonight?

I don't drink much alcohol nowadays but when fancy a pint it's Theakston Old Peculier or Hobgoblin Ruby Beer.

If I'm with friends at the pub it's Guinness 0.0
I was totally with you for the first paragraph Ian! 🤟

Then it all got a bit weird mate! 😳 😉 🤣

Like others, I don't drink much these days and if I was forced to make a choice between coffee and alcohol, I'd choose coffee.
However, last night I had a couple of small glasses of Rose.
I am partial to Baileys and Guinness, and I have to say that recently I've tried 0% Guinness, which I could not tell the difference between 0% and the alcohol version.

Agree, about the Guinness, they taste exactly the same. To be fair, so do a lot of 0% Lagers and Ciders. I Remember the 1st 0% Lager I tried, years ago. Kaliber think it was called, twas bloody awful.
But now they, do taste the same, but not with the same effect. 🤪

I entered a competition in the late 80's or early 90''s (can't remember exactly)
It was to come up with a tag-line for an alcohol free beer/lager called Talisman.
You had to finish this sentence...."I drink Talisman because...."
My submission was..."Because it means relaxation without regret"...
A few months later I got a letter saying I'd won a prize & details would follow! 🤗

Now, the prizes mentioned on the beer mat were a choice between a drive in a rally car or a flight in a helicopter etc etc.

A while later a frigging sweatshirt turned up! 😡
Apparently the runners up prizes weren't mentioned on the beer mat! 🙄

Sample a Guinness and a Guinness zero and there's a taste difference, not in a bad way though.
For probably the last 6-8 months I've ordered a Guinness zero if out and driving, yesterday afternoon i had to settle for a lager zero as the small hotel bar didn't have the Guinness option.

Firstly just using your post @boyfrom64 as an example so please don't take offence.

I dislike the use of the term 'alcohol' in the context of this thread, as if that was a drink in itself. Alcohol is just an ingredient, and a very small ingredient in most drinks such as beer/lager/ale. Alcoholic drinks cover a wide range of styles. An alco-pop or flavoured cider for example is a very different beast to a dram of neat whisky or a measure of rum. A bitter beer is very different drink to a glass of rosé.
Personally I wouldn't drink alcohol and wouldn't recommend it to anyone, but I really enjoy some alcoholic drinks and positively detest others.
Same as for other things in life, I don't love or hate vegetables, some I like, some I don't etc. etc..
:) Minor rant over now, I'll sit down and have a rest and a coffee, but a decent one as after all, not all coffees are the same.

When I used to drink, I loved single malts.

Still miss them like mad.

But I take so many medications every day (I used to take 52 meds a day, although some were repeated, now I'm down to around 30), I can't drink alcohol any more.**

But I'm loving the explosion in zero beers in the last decade or so.

I think my fave has to be Guinness 0%. But there are many others.

And I had some great ones in France and Belgium recently, too.

**Can I tell you a little story about that?

At one point, I was taking so many meds (must have been the 50-odd a day) that I was feeling constantly sick and dreadful.

I went to the GP and you won't believe what he said.

Without any hint of irony, he looked me straight in the eye and said...

"I can give you a tablet for that..."

Sometimes, they just don't understand things from a patient's perspective.

I don't drink anymore, I doubt I could and still stay upright, but I still try every so often :p

I can quite understand the comment about not being able to tell the difference between normal Guiness and 0% alcohol Guiness ...... without even having tried the 0% alcohol version ;)
I guess being so far away from good beer, and being able to handle drinking the stuff warm, I can sort of understand why Baileys might be a better option .....

Coopers Extra Stout @ 6.8%, apparently comparable to Guinness Foreign Extra Stout. Coopers beers are all brewed in the bottle, no added gases to make a head.
Southwark Ols Stout, also known as Bad boys, 7.4% and just a bit thicker and a tad bitter compared to the Coopers, a bit like the difference between Cadburys dark chocolate and really dark chocolate ..... both are hard to stop at the one and certainly loosen the shoe laces when you hit the fresh air.

Dubliner Honeycomb whiskey over ice, @30% and smooth as, it goes down easy and you don't notice it coming back around a kicking your brains out.

Fireball over ice @ 33%, slows down the follow up glasses that is renowned for, takes longer to realise you brain has shut down ....

Glayva over ice a 35%, a well received Christmas present when the extended family get together, because of the heat around Christmas over here. A fine mesh cover is required over the glass because the flies simply drop out of the air over an open glass, requiring the careful removal with the teaspoon and 10 to 15 mins to forget all about it ever happening and drink the rest of the glass

Durif, a full bodied red wine best produced in the Rutherglen area near the Victorian/NSW border.

A can of cheap Lidl 8% beer which is OK , but we have some chopped up liquorice root , add a tea spoon full with a lump of brown sugar and just cover with boiling water . Leave to cool , strain and add to said beer . Ruddy wonderful. 😵‍💫
Blimey 8% that's strong stuff 🤣

Some of the bigger supermarkets have a wider range of selections . The highest ABV I've seen is 15% . Not partaken in that one , stronger than a lot of wine , although must admit , it keeps winking at me when I pass by. Even Lidl do 10 and 12% versions , again not tried.
