What car did you replace with your MG?

Particularly good as the thread died almost 5 years ago. Things have changed so much since then and possibly the reasons for changing.
Yep my reason 4 years ago were because I didn't do alot of miles and stayed out all week
Now it's because I commute every day

I did post on another thread about a similar subject, but it'd be worth reiterating the sentiments on this too.
The MG 4 replaced a 2012 Ford C Max 1.6 Diesel. That was a good car. It fulfilled the requirements from the Vauxhall Meriva we had before that. It was economical, 50 plus MPG, had a 6 speed gearbox and fell in the £30 road tax band. All good then?....... By 2022 Diesel was starting to be frowned on as dirty, and with the emissions rules changing for central London ULEZ in 2023 it seemed time to look elsewhere.
I took a fresh approach, and seeing all the advantages and advances in EV's I started taking a look at the EV market. Then the TV adverts started popping up for the MG 4. I had a look, then a test drive, then another, and then went back with my wife to see what she thought too.
We got ours March 23, before the rush of EV sales that were soon to be happening!. Then the government started moving the targets, so for a time it looked as though the whole thing was coming off the rails.
I haven't regretted the decision at all, I'm enjoying EV motoring, and guess what I'll next be going too... haven't decided but it will definitely be an EV.

I didn't realise the thread had been dormant so long. I thought I had actually replied to it earlier, but perhaps there was another similar one.

So, meet Prospero, the 2009 Golf GTi Mk6.

Yes. Ferdinand was a speed-cop magnet, unfortunately. I think he was so light, he seemed to go like a bat out of hell. Particularly compared to the relatively staid Miranda.
Have you seen the current values of that era of fast Fords? 😳
If you sold Ferdinand now he'd probably raise enough for a Caliban.

I traded him in for Ariel (at five years old and about 53,000 miles) because my senior partner said, I want a new car and by the terms of the partnership agreement you have to have one too. What do you fancy?

I moved up a notch to a larger car because Ferdinand didn't have aircon and I was melting. Also he didn't have power steering which I hadn't thought I needed but he was a lot heavier to steer than Miranda had been.

I think Ferdinand was one of the last XR2s ever made.

Our 2026 MG4 Premium replaced a 2020 VW Polo.
The Polo only had 43K miles on the clock but for the last 12 months we have been having intermittent issues and the service from the VW dealer had gone down after they got brought out by a larger group.

Mrs T’s MG4 Essence 64 ‘Orange I am’ replaced my 2009 Peugeot 308 Hdi ‘Percy’.

The 308 was solid for sure, countless trips from Sydney to Queensland with barely a grumble. The large curved rear window gave great visibility (pre cameras). I did have to sell one kidney to replace the 17” front discs and the other one to replace timing belt at 120k km. Once in QLD with no yearly safety inspection it could slowly dismantle itself to its heart’s content. The Aircon died, so did three of its electric windows. It wouldn’t start after being parked on an up slope. The headlights had started to glaze over. One winter’s morning the roof lining was down. And the lighting loomed started to fail from poor solder joints.

In the end I couldn’t live with the amount of particulates pouring out the back, so I swapped it for 2x24 slabs of watery Mexican beer. (Made in Australia.)

We had just installed a shed load of solar on the roof with batteries, so the move to an EV was a no brainer. I bought the MG4 for Mrs T’s 60th birthday and scored more ‘Hubby Points’ than David B will ever earn 😂 plus a cheque from the QLD government for $6000.
After 20 months the MG4 has been faultless and a pleasure to drive everyday. The lack of constant vibration has probably saved me from hip surgery. And rediscovering rear wheel drive, with a bucket load of torque after 15 years has been eye opening.
I sit here waiting patiently for a mid sized EV Ute to hit the market. To which I will add a tent and a fridge and an electric BBQ. So the dog and I can hit the road. Both vehicles batteries and brakes will out live us and will cost us virtually nothing to run. Except for eye wateringly expensive insurance considering we’re in our mid 60s doing less than 20 km a year.

Correction: There is no winter in SE Queensland. 😎

Was that watery Mexican beer the one where they couldn't spell beer so they just put 4 XXXX on the label? It's only watery because it's what Coopers Extra Stout glasses were rinsed in ......

I remember a well known identity mechanic back in Wollongong asking a walk in customer who was asking about getting repairs done .....
"Is that a Peugeot? Thank you for not parking it in my driveway, that sort of image can destroy a good reputation." He gave him directions to the Peugeot independent specialist whom everyone was happy to refer any Peugeot owners their way.

I remember a Castlemaine XXXX, known as Four X, in my yoof. It was rubbish.

To be fair our local Peugeot dealer in Nambour did all they could to help. They have real trouble holding their on to good mechanics so it used to be a 2 week waiting list for a service appointment. I can get an MRI in Noosa in under 24 hours 👍
When I asked about a new electric window controller he couldn’t get it under $750 😮 and that was with me fitting it. But he did look in the used box for me but no nothing. So 9/10 for trying. When it comes to foreign makes of car, the Aussies are all about Toyota 😂

To be honest I’m so glad I’m no longer at the mercy of 3000 moving parts. Things like Carbs, Timing Belts, Fuel Pumps, Radiators, Dirty Diesel and Starter Motors. Did I miss any?
