The battery on the Niro died at just over 3 yrs old, it's a PHEV so boots into electric mode on startup, the battery does not crank the engine. It would power up all the dash and run a system check but wouldn't boot the main battery, bloody annoying.

Ah... I never thought about that - so do all PHEV's just use the forward motion / inertia of the vehicle to turn the combustion engine over to start it

Good question, do they even have a starter motor? guess they must , for when the battery is on 0% .
Or is there always a large bottom buffer in the battery below the 0% level to get it moving at traffic lights etc.
I'm now waiting for all the "bottom buffer " puns....

Maybe not... when the battery is on 0% you just turn on the ignition, charm two chaps to give you a push, then at 5mph just let the clutch out with the vehicle in 2nd gear. Simple. Why did cars have to get so complicated

PHEVs tend to use the HV motor/battery as the starter, rather than use a conventional separate starter motor system off the 12V battery.

Mine kicks in the petrol engine after it's booted the main battery when it's cold to heat the cabin (I presume) and when the battery gets to 25% it will switch to petrol power, I've never seen the battery go any lower than 14%

TBF it's not bad on electric alone, considering it's only something like a 39hp motor, it's not quick off the line but will reach 85mph on electric alone.
