MG4 Software Update Thread

Just got my Trophy (with rear wiper) yesterday. Version seems to be R40 asked them about R46 and they said I have the latest?
But I am very pleased with the LKA! when I test drove a trophy in July I was really worried about it as it almost jerked the wheel out of my hands when I got on a white line. But driving home from dealer yesterday, I tested it by going on to the white line, it made me smile a lot as I was bracing for it to yank me back but there was a beep and a gentle nudge. So pleased!
The only annoying thing I noticed but havn't had change to check out yet is everytime I drove in shadow from trees the screen went into dark mode for ages. I am hoping there is a way to turn off or turn down sensitivity?

I solved the light sensor problem with this cover, 3D printed

We found out that dark mode comes on when the automatic headlights switch on. So it's a simple flick of the left forefinger to turn off auto headlights by swiping right on the stalk.

And yes, it's a pity the earlier LKA issues have had such a long shadow.

If anyone is following (or interested!), I've been back to my dealer this morning to try and fix the continued plight of the bluetooth pairing request.

Phase 1 Trophy (no rear wiper, 17"). Delivered June 2023 with R30 installed. Updated to R33 in July due to Android Auto freezing and screen going black.

I then got the frequent pairing request issue so went back to dealer. They raised a case with MG and within a couple of days they booked me in for another update.

R46 has been installed today. Bluetooth has paired fine. Android Auto connected fine. Let's see if the pairing problems have now disappeared.

Interestingly, on R30 and R33, Android Auto was full screen. With R46, the top bar with the outside temp and climate notification remains permanently. Which I actually like.

That's awesome, mine is in tomorrow, currently on R33 with the annoying BT issue.

You can set the car to be in permanent dark mode or light mode in the settings. That will stop the screen changing when the lights come on.

Yes, it seems that the policy is to install R46 if people are having bluetooth issues, so if you want the latest, best to complain about this.

Indeed. Although I had to prove I was having the problem. They didn't just take my word for it.

Thankfully the 10+ MG bluetooth devices listed in my phone's bluetooth settings, coupled with photos of the MG screen, easily proved this.

Thanks, I just spent some time in the car looking through all the settings and noticed the auto/dark/light. Not the easiest interface to find stuff.
I spent ages looking for Bind car for ismart after watching a video but it didn't exist, so I then went through every menu, then I found that they had changed it to USER not bind.
The dealers didn't know about the change, they didn't even believe me when I said wow the air con screen has changed and is much better than on my test drive, they had to look at it then at an older one!

I asked them to check multiple times but they insisted r40 was the latest, I didn't have any problems as I had only just got it. Phone seems to connect with no problems so far?

I don't know for sure, but I think R40 is the standard release and R46 being more selectively made available to people with specific problems.

Mine was delivered with R40 so I asked them to check and they confirmed a ‘recall’ for R46 was now available. Push them for it 😊

Against all advice on this forum I had booked my MG4 SE LR in to Bath MG for a software update as I was on R13 for infotainment and was sorely missing Android Auto nav guidance directions. At the time of booking (2nd August) I was advised that there was a service recall on the car in relation to software - the earliest they could do the work was today. I took the car down at 10am, explained that I was looking to update the Infotainment software to R16 (but now I see that R21 or even R29 might be available), and could they also look at the lane keeping assistance. At 2.45pm I picked up the car, having been told that all its software was fully up to date. I set off with the radio going and Android Auto guiding me home, excited to hear Android Assistant directions at last. Got to the first junction - nothing, not a sausage. So I went into the Vehicle menu and looked at the System page - and infotainment was still on R13!

I'm not sure what the garage have been doing for the 4.5 hours they had the car, and I'm pretty sure they have no idea either. I left them 'talking to technical' as they couldn't understand why the update 'hadn't taken'. They did say that the dealers don't get sent the software updates, they have to download them from a central server - a sensible approach I think - so my suspicion is that they either updated my car with the same software as it was already on, or they somehow didn't follow the update process properly. At least they didn't brick the car. I look forward to hearing from them tomorrow with their latest take on the situation. 🤣
So, after deafening silence from Bath MG since last Thursday when they failed to update my SE LR software from R13, I decided to go in and have chat. The guy started off by telling me he'd tried calling me yesterday, but strangely I had no missed calls on my mobile. After that, he told me that the car was due a software upgrade to R21. I said the car had been booked in with them for a software upgrade on Thursday last week but it hadn't been successful. He then tried to tell me that the car had actually been updated to R13 at that visit. I told him it had already been on R13 at that time. He said, well another dealer must have updated it then. I said no, it was on R13 when I took delivery of the car. Earliest dates available for them to have another go at the software update are 21/22 Sept, with only dates in October after that. This is after the original booking I made on 2nd August for the software update, with 31st August bring the earliest available date at that time, when they failed to update it. The guy was downright rude to me during the conversation, but did eventually apologise when I pulled him up on it. Shambolic - be warned if you use Bath MG.

This is exactly part of the reason why I will be using an independent qualified garage to service my car once I have all the parts fixed and software updated. MG seem to only employ one or no technicians, which creates SPOF (single point of failure) and leads to lengthy lead times for visits.
As Iv'e mentioned before, they may as well shut up shop with regards to servicing and parts with an attitude and service as above and out source to approved independents. My local dealership has a 'Service & Parts' painted on the wall inside, but no staff at all, so they sent me over the road to Volvo !. Shambles of a service right now, they either up their game or bail out.

Have 2 year free service with my car, but won’t be taking it the dealership I bought the car from but the main dealer in Wakefield. Fingers crossed there better and the 3rd year I will be able to get rid of the car. Hallelujah

Keep us posted how you get on if you do take it to Wakefield. When I looked at their reviews on Trust Pilot they were pretty mixed at best.

Won’t be until next June but I’d never recommend anyone use MG Barnsley they were a complete joke. Had to go through to the completes team to accomplish anything these were based Wakefield, which is the head office. Complaints manager James Grey (who was very good) said don’t bother with Barnsley and just come to Wakefield in the future …. We will see

I looked at a MG4 Trophy in the showroom at Wakefield earlier on this year and wasn’t thinking of buying one till next year but I ended up getting one this year on a 0% PCP deal publicised by Miles from Chorley Group. Picked it up from Burnley, Wakefield I think we’re only doing a PCP deal at 8% at that time.

Finally got around to calling my local dealer with my list of gripes, and was met with a simple response of "can you come in on the 27th? Sorry it's a bit of a wait, there are a few updates we can do to resolve those". Given some of the responses on here, was pretty pleased to hear that!

He seemed pretty confident they had a fix for the BT pairing, and also the fact the radio keeps freezing. Our random door locking issue was a new one though apparently (when we get out the car after driving, we cannot open the passenger of rear doors, and have to repeatedly lock/unlock the car to get them to open)

Random door locking - I noticed that the other day. (I got out from the driver's seat and went round to the nearside rear door and it wouldn't open. Going back and pressing the unlock button on the driver's door resolved things). I think the only thing I did differently was to apply the handbrake before opening the driver's door rather than pressing the parking brake - but I've no idea if that is related.
