charger

A battery charger, or recharger, is a device that stores energy in a battery by running an electric current through it. The charging protocol (how much voltage or current for how long, and what to do when charging is complete) depends on the size and type of the battery being charged. Some battery types have high tolerance for overcharging (i.e., continued charging after the battery has been fully charged) and can be recharged by connection to a constant voltage source or a constant current source, depending on battery type. Simple chargers of this type must be manually disconnected at the end of the charge cycle. Other battery types use a timer to cut off when charging should be complete. Other battery types cannot withstand over-charging, becoming damaged (reduced capacity, reduced lifetime), over heating or even exploding. The charger may have temperature or voltage sensing circuits and a microprocessor controller to safely adjust the charging current and voltage, determine the state of charge, and cut off at the end of charge.
Chargers may elevate the output voltage proportionally with current to compensate for impedance in the wires.A trickle charger provides a relatively small amount of current, only enough to counteract self-discharge of a battery that is idle for a long time. Some battery types cannot tolerate trickle charging; attempts to do so may result in damage. Lithium-ion batteries cannot handle indefinite trickle charging.
Slow battery chargers may take several hours to complete a charge. High-rate chargers may restore most capacity much faster, but high rate chargers can be more than some battery types can tolerate. Such batteries require active monitoring of the battery to protect it from overcharging. Electric vehicles ideally need high-rate chargers. For public access, installation of such chargers and the distribution support for them is an issue in the proposed adoption of electric cars.

    Charger type to avoid.

This is a very old model charger and 90% unlikely to charge your mg5. There's a communications? issue where it does not see the ccs plug as locked in place, so it will not allow a charge to start. These are dotted about all over Scotland, and some do work, like the middle one of three at broxden...

    Pulsar Plus Wall Charger

Anybody got any views/thoughts on a pulsar Plus home Charger? That's the model I have been quoted by a local installer. It's only got a 3 year warranty which is slightly disappointing.

Upgrade ZS EV onboard AC to DC charger

I wonder if MG could offer an upgrade to the ZS EV's onboard AC to DC charger to accept a higher power input, its frustrating that there are now 20+ kW AC power stations all over the country and we are limited to 7Kw I would be happier with the battery size if this was to happen as it opens up a...

    Battery balance on public charger

Hi everyone, Looking at getting a ZS EV within the next few weeks, coming from an ICE car so it will be my first EV. I've read a fair bit about battery balancing/equalisation charging on these forums and in the handbook. I don't have a drive, so can't get a home charger; so will be relying...

    Granny charger waterproof?

Stupid question of the week award, but I assume the supplied MG granny charger is full waterproof? As in, the entire unit? I have an outdoor socket near where I part that I'll be using for meantime until I can decide on which wall box to go for.

Charging MG5 EV with 3-pin charger only over pavement, my experienced in a terraced property in London

I hope it is okay for me to post a video I made about my experiences charging using the granny-lead only on my MG5. This forum has been immensely helpful in suggesting new products to use to make charging safer for owners as well as pedestrians when running charge cables over the pavement.

    Charger Install Ripoff

Hi all. I'm getting quotes to have a Zappi charger installed at my home. I have a 3 phase supply (for historical reasons). 1 phase feeds the main building consumer unit, 1 phase directly feeds the garage consumer unit (and nothing else) and the 3rd phase is unused. Each phase has a 60/80A supply...

Charger reading battery percentage from the car

I noticed when DC charging recently (on first proper long journey), that the charger knows (it displays it) what percentage the battery is. Clearly it is something that is and can be communicated via the type 2 cable. So, why don't our installed home "chargers" read it and are able to manage...

Any downside/dealer warnings about only using 'granny charger' every day?

When I took delivery of my MG EP EV (Same as UK MG5) here in Thailand, the saleswoman, who of course spoke only Thai, warned that we should not charge only with the granny charger, and that if we do, that once every week we should use the dealership Type 2 AC fast chargers (for free, but 4.5...
