charger
A battery charger, or recharger, is a device that stores energy in a battery by running an electric current through it. The charging protocol (how much voltage or current for how long, and what to do when charging is complete) depends on the size and type of the battery being charged. Some battery types have high tolerance for overcharging (i.e., continued charging after the battery has been fully charged) and can be recharged by connection to a constant voltage source or a constant current source, depending on battery type. Simple chargers of this type must be manually disconnected at the end of the charge cycle. Other battery types use a timer to cut off when charging should be complete. Other battery types cannot withstand over-charging, becoming damaged (reduced capacity, reduced lifetime), over heating or even exploding. The charger may have temperature or voltage sensing circuits and a microprocessor controller to safely adjust the charging current and voltage, determine the state of charge, and cut off at the end of charge.
Chargers may elevate the output voltage proportionally with current to compensate for impedance in the wires.A trickle charger provides a relatively small amount of current, only enough to counteract self-discharge of a battery that is idle for a long time. Some battery types cannot tolerate trickle charging; attempts to do so may result in damage. Lithium-ion batteries cannot handle indefinite trickle charging.
Slow battery chargers may take several hours to complete a charge. High-rate chargers may restore most capacity much faster, but high rate chargers can be more than some battery types can tolerate. Such batteries require active monitoring of the battery to protect it from overcharging. Electric vehicles ideally need high-rate chargers. For public access, installation of such chargers and the distribution support for them is an issue in the proposed adoption of electric cars.
I am planning to stop at a Tesla centre (Cardiff) and looked it up on Zapmap to see if there were any others nearby.
Anyway, clicked on the Tesla one on Zapmap to compare prices and it says "Un-tethered Connection, user cable required."
Now this is surely nonsense. There is no way you'd bring...
Hi All,
I just installed the Wall Charger 1phase 7kW model EVC-VS200-32C , got it from the MG dealer when I bought the MG 4ev, but it doesnot have detailed manual guide how to connect to WiFi / Bluetooth or the apps. only comes with the RFID card to START/STOP charging.
Been asking my...
Hi, I recently upgraded my WiFi and now my home charger has lost its connection to my charger app. Is it possible to charge the car without WiFi using my home charger
Hello I have an MG4 for only a couple of days and come to use the granny charger for the first time at home. No extension cables just straight from plug socket out the window. It says “connected- not charging” and I cannot get it to charge. Does anyone have any tips ?!
Does anyone else have an EO charger which stopped working in February this year?
I am trying to find out if I am the only one who has a problem. Currently I am in dispute with EO, EDF, who have offered respectively 23% ish off a new charge point or £50.00!
I cannot believe that a list price...
Elsewhere on this site, I have been moaning about an EO charger that seems to be duff.
Last night, the Charger switched on as per schedule, but did not charge. This morning, the 12 volt was flat enough not to switch on the car. I imagine that the charger switched on the 12V circuits, which then...
Hi
I’m about to take delivery of a MG ZS EV. Is there a conventional cigarette charger fitted which will accept my old sat nav.
The adaptors from USB to conventional cigarette lighter doesn’t seem to be much good according to the reviews on Amazon for instance.
If I need to consider that...
Had my charger installed at an eye watering price it should have had a ct clamp and load limiting according to paper work (wasn’t overly bothered as it’s done dead of night only - not hitting the limits). Been nearly a year since the unloop request. Next door works for the DNO but not on...
Gosh, it's a bit of a saga...
My EO Mini Pro 2 charger seems to have bitten the dust.!
I have used it as a dumb charger for 3 years and 3 months. Recently, I have tried to programme it so that I can have timed charges with Octopus Go.
It took some setting up, but at last it logged on, and I...
Well not sure if I've actually done a conditioning charge or not?
Came back from a holiday trip with 13% charge remaining, put it on the granny charger for 24hrs to 100%
i can see that Tesla is making its chargers accessible, & i can get their App & register my payment card, but how do i find out when planning my route if a particular Tesla charger will let my MG5 use that charger? & without setting up a monthly account which i do not need?

I acquire my MG4 SE LR today and giving its first charge at home - it keeps tripping out whilst charging - the car started at 33% it is now 55% and has tripped the charger 4 times, never on plugging and I haven't had the patience to wait to find out when it does. Suspect the RCB in the charger...
For better or worse ;) I bought one of these for our 1 week old MG4 via eBay link - described as:
iON Tech 7kW 32A EV Charger 5 Meter Tethered Type 2 Level 2, 5x Cards+ Wi-Fi APP
As with a lot of 'cheap' (and I assume Chinese) equipment, likely good hardware is let down by (very) poor manuals...
Hi everyone. I'm contemplating buying a MG5 in the near future and I'm currently with Octopus. I was just wondering what charge/tariff to plump for?
Many thanks in advance.
As we know there's no V2L capability on Pre-lift MG5, so I decided to do a DIY version. The onboard charger is capable of delivering around 170amps to 12V battery, however the charging circuit fuse is 150amps, so we are looking at maximum 2.1kw max. I bought 2kw pure sine wave inverter, as I...
Has anyone experienced an error on their OHME charger where the side strips turn red and the screen says error? It gives no indication what the "error" is.
This has been happening for several evenings. There is no car plugged in and nothing charging. It just happens. I've tried to find out what...
Hiya
Got my MG4 on Monday and really enjoying so far, few pain points but learning.
Current biggest concern is the charging, I had a leaf with the exact same setup and that worked as it should, but now with the MG4 in the picture having a problem.
Basically my Zappi charger is set to Eco++...
Hi, had charger installed a couple of days ago and the installer said that after 4pm the update would be complete and I’d be able to link it to the app - which is a web portal as BP apparently got rid of the app. So I went on the web portal and registered and now when I log on to try and link...
This might be a silly question, but ...
I have the slow charger that came with the car, but I don't have any sockets close enough to plug it into.
Can I use my Type 2 cable as an "extension lead" between the charger and the car?
(Id rather use some excess solar to charge the car, than to give...
