I have just installed an auto-dimming rear view mirror in my S5. I wanted to offer advice and a warning to those accessing the passenger compartment fuse board. I have attached a PDF which are the MG technician instructions for accessing the fuses. It is really easy and just requires a little prying and removal of two screws.

The instructions state that you should first disconnect the 12v battery earth. When I reconnected it, several systems where saying they were unavailable. These were numerous and included stability control, lane assist, hill hold and more. After double checking I had done nothing wrong and doing a factory reset, I decided to go to the MG dealer. During that journey, of around 40 minutes, all the errors cleared themselves. No intervention was required.

It was quite scary for a while and I thought I had damaged something. I hadn't. The system just needs time to pull itself together.

Regards
Peter.

IIRC turning the steering wheel lock to lock a couple of time fixes this...

Welcome to the forum.

Resetting the various systems after reconnecting the 12V battery by driving the car is standard across most of MG's EV range. You might find you have to turn the steering wheel lock to lock to re-calibrate it is also required.

Hi GadgetBloke, I would love to change my rear view mirror for an auto-dim variant - have you a link for one you (or others) may recommend, please?

...talking of auto-dim mirrors, I've just got back from two weeks in Puerto Rico. Cars there have dimming switches in the same way that BMWs have indicators; one assumes that they must be fitted, but no-one ever, ever uses them.

Driving up steep, very narrow, mountain roads with minimal road markings and deep, deep pot-holes and mud slides, at night, in torrential rain-forest rain, with everyone else, following and in the opposite direction, permanently on full beam was one of the most harrowing experiences of my life.

We in Western Europe have no idea about difficult driving conditions.

Hi Ian. Is there a better way to reset the systems than just driving? I tried the steering wheel lock to lock, but it didn’t have any effect.

Hi TheBlakey.
I can’t absolutely recommend the mirror I’ve fitted. Not because of its functionality, which is excellent, but because it was so difficult to fit. The arm on the one I bought was too short, so I took both the original mirror and the new one apart and fitted the old arm on the new mirror. That required sawing off the old ball socket and drilling holes to mount it to the new one with screws. It worked well, but had the arm been longer, it hold have been totally unnecessary.

Driving while waiting for the assist systems to reset is not particularly pleasant. I was hoping there would be a simple reset procedure.
On my MG4 I only had to drive it round the block when I changed the 12V battery. I haven't had to do it on the MGS5 but I wouldn't have thought you would have to drive it far. .
