Tesla Supercharger Issue MG5 LR

Booked my pre-facelift 22 MG5 in for next month - 3 year service & MOT.

I asked about the update and even said that if it couldn't be done under warranty I'd pay for it (after all, it's not the dealer's fault and life's too short to spend time arguing the toss).

After the receptionist checked with the service manager and got back to me, she said they were going to get on to MG to try and get it done under warranty, but if not would do it for the technician's time only - worst case scenario a hundred quid if it takes an hour, but probably half that.

I don't have high hopes of getting it done under warranty, but at least they seem to be trying.
I’m curious about the model number of your EVCC. It’s easily accessible next to the battery, as you can see here: MG5 Supercharger: FAQ 2 - What upgrades does my MG5 need to use a Tesla charger?. Since our cars are the same age, I thought you might be interested.

Or, if you’re an owner with this model number, I’d love to hear from you. I asked MG about it, and they were very helpful, but they couldn’t really give me a definitive answer. They suggested that some larger dealers might have experience with this issue and be able to apply the software update. It’s a simple update, so it shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes to apply. However, it seems like some cars will take the update and some won’t. My nearest other dealer is Mill Hill, but they didn’t know either. Until I get more information, I’m a bit stuck. Even MG agreed that £360 just to upgrade for a Tesla charger isn’t worth it.

Sorry, I had a good look but couldn't see any numbers without taking the whole engine bay cover off which I couldn't be @rsed to do.

Anyway it all got done yesterday successfully, and no surprise I got charged for the technician's time which came to about 70 quid, so not bad to have the peace of mind it's all done.

I have no idea where my nearest open Tesla charging site is to test it out though.

Well done Jim pity about the £70 but you have it now. So go on to google type in "Tesla Superchargers open to all" for a map, or download the Tesla spp; then you need to set up an account for payments and you're done. Simple.

Your nearest is just south of Durham at Bowburn so not far.
Unit 1 Low Main Court,
Integra 61 North
Bowburn DH6 5NP

Click the following link to see where all open to all sites are without using the app. You can move around and zoom in and out easily, making it easier for planning, then use the app, (you will need it set up with a payment card) to get there and start charges etc.

Current pricing near me for the update:
Budgen MG Telford: £134
Brindley MG Wolverhampton: £130
but if you are considering using them for a service you might be able to negotiate a big discount on those figures. (Once the car is in the workshop it is only a few minutes work)

Not too much hope but I'll definitely give it a go.

Wolverhampton charge £130 more than Telford for the service so I won't be taking in there, although the lady on the device desk immediately knew about the update.

Telford took all day to understand the problem once I'd booked in for a service, and I was promised a call back 3 times. Each time I had to chase up myself. Finally one of the people on the service desk spoke to a technician and advised they charge £130 For the update.

I rarely pass a Tesla charger unless I'm heading south, so unless it's done for free or reasonably cheap this isn't a logical investment.

I think that if you explain to them that you'll take it elsewhere for a service then you might get some leverage. (Of course, it helps if there is somewhere else you can take it)

They told me they would just charge for labour so cost would depend how long it took them (estimate was 'up to an hour'). In the end it took half an hour.
I might be doing them a disservice but my suspicion is that half an hour is their minimum time period.

£130 quoted as a standalone at Budgen MG Telford, so I gave it a miss a few weeks back.

However, my FL MG5 was in for a service today and I mentioned if they could apply the update and drop me a call if there was a cost. They called and quoted £40.28. That's much more reasonable and I'll get that back in a few charges.

Will try it next time I'm near a Tesla charger.

Tried today; "Electrical Grid Abnormal." Very frustrating!

The dealer is calling me back on Monday as the technician who was working on the car has gone home for the day.

Still no sign of over the air updates!!! This would save everyone a lot of money. The owner, dealer and MG

Quite unlikely for an MG5 - It doesn't have the hardware it would need.
It definitely DOES have the hardware needed i.e. bi directional communication. MG haven't implemented this feature and I doubt they will, judging by customer service experiences by others on here, this topic being a prime example.

Didn't hear back from the dealer.

I called at 1.30 on the Monday and was advised someone would call back in 10 mins.

I didn't hear anything so called at 3.30 and was advised it was with a manager and I'd receive a call back shortly. This didn't happen either.

Sadly I'll have to take the £40 hit and accept this is lost.

If anyone needs the required update, Budgen in Telford is one to avoid.

You're being much more "polite" about this than I would be!

If you've paid them to do a specific job for you and it's either not been done or it's not "worked" you should be demanding either that they redo it, properly this time, or give you a full refund.

Does anyone know of any MG dealers in Central Scotland or the North of England that do the Tesla Super Charger update for a pre-facelift MG5 Long Range? I phoned Central Garage in Galashiels, but the guy on the phone was clueless, took my number and after about 10 days, he still hasn't called me back. I normally use Cleeveley to service my MG5, but they said that they couldn't do the upgrade and that it had to be done at an MG dealer. I'm not desperate, as I charge at home and seldom use public chargers. It would just be nice to be able to use Tesla Super Chargers, if I am out and about.

Can you tell me the name of the MG dealer that you used, as my local dealer is clueless?
