charging stations

A charging station, also known as a charge point or electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), is a piece of equipment that supplies electrical power for charging plug-in electric vehicles (including electric cars, electric trucks, electric buses, neighborhood electric vehicles, and plug-in hybrids).
There are two main types: AC charging stations and DC charging stations. Batteries can only be charged with direct current (DC) electric power, while most electricity is delivered from the power grid as alternating current (AC). For this reason, most electric vehicles have a built-in AC-to-DC converter, commonly known as the "onboard charger". At an AC charging station, AC power from the grid is supplied to this onboard charger, which produces DC power to charge the battery. DC chargers facilitate higher power charging (which requires much larger AC-to-DC converters) by building the converter into the charging station instead of the vehicle to avoid size and weight restrictions. The station then supplies DC power to the vehicle directly, bypassing the onboard converter. Most fully electric car models can accept both AC and DC power.
Charging stations provide connectors that conform to a variety of international standards. DC charging stations are commonly equipped with multiple connectors to be able to charge a wide variety of vehicles that utilize competing standards.
Public charging stations are typically found street-side or at retail shopping centers, government facilities, and other parking areas. Private charging stations are typically found at residences, workplaces, and hotels.

    Charging stations in Google Maps

Hi everyone, Just thought I'd mention this in case any Android Auto users didn't know about it. It's in Search, Categories, Charging Stations, and here's how it works: Yesterday, like Bilbo Baggins, I had an unexpected journey and decided to drive it as I would an ICE car without planning it...

    Just bought one of these

So far I've been lucky at public chargers and I've never been soaked. I figure though that it's only a matter of time. I don't fancy driving a long distance wearing full rainwear. On the other hand, you have to get out of the car to put on a jacket, and if the rain is heavy enough then you'll...

    Tesla chargers at Heartlands M8

Tried to use The new Tesla chargers at Heartlands today. They are shown on their website as 'open to non Tesla cars' but I got there to find that the site is not listed in the Tesla app and the card readers have not been enabled so there is no way of starting a charge. I now see that Zapmap...

    EV charging prices

Hi everyone! What do you guys think about the prices for EV charging today? I recently counted that apps like ChargePoint add nearly 79% to the charging station's original price and are not the only ones. What do you do about it: find cheaper solutions or prefer not to use public chargers or...

(quite) long trip this weekend - any advice/guidance?

Traveling a total of 280 miles (140 each way) on Saturday. Trophy here. I am very nervous about being able to do this on one charge (in fact I'm not going to try it - even assuming 100% state of charge to start!) I can get to my destination and about 1/2 way back in 200 miles where there is...

    Charging apps pet peeve

Whenever I download and try an app to find charging stations or charge at them, they all seem to have various colour codings for the chargers on the map but no key. The latest is VendElectric, which apparently I have to use for holiday cottage charging. The chargers are blue or green but there...

Two week trip to Spain, just a few thoughts

Well after a 3500 journey, in which the car behaved impeccably on the whole, I thought I'd note down a few things I found. So lets start with the car, as I said on the whole it was very well behaved with a couple of minor exceptions. ACC doesn't like overtaking lorries and I had many occasions...

MG4 - Am I right in thinking this could be the right fit for me?

Hey, I have been thinking about this question for a good 6 months now, doing research, talking to dealerships and checking out forums. I am however still not 100% sure the MG4 Trophy or indeed any EV will work for me. My dilemma is that I do a long commute 5 days a week of about 95 miles there...

Can't charge at some charging stations

I own a MG5 EV facelift (not long range) in Belgium. I usually charge at home but I've recently been experimenting with charging stations. Some work but with others I have the following issue: I plug in the car, lock it and scan my card. The charger will say (translated) "Charging is being...

What charging stations can I use?

I've just bought an MG5 long range, love this car to bits, quite probably the nicest car I've ever owned, and I've owned quite a few. I'm retired and use the car only for short journeys so find the supplied lead into an 13A outside socket quite adequate. However we've just done out first...

    EV charging stations

ZS EV Mk1 Satnav- show charging stations

I have had my ZS EV Exclusive for around 8 months now and wondered if anyone can get the Satnav to show charging stations on route? New significant charging stations

Hi all, I thought this might be an interesting thread. If you spot news of an upcoming charging station, perhaps in an otherwise charging desert....... Here's mine.
