SAIC begins production of updated MG4 — launch in August
SAIC Motor has started mass production of the updated MG4 electric hatchback, with the first car rolling off the assembly line at its Nanjing plant. The official Chinese launch is scheduled for August, when we’ll get the full specifications and pricing. We don't have UK details, yet.

Bigger size, same mechanical layout
The new MG4 gets updated styling, revised dimensions, and new tech.
Regulatory filings show it’s powered by a 120 kW rear-mounted electric motor, continuing the single-motor RWD setup.
It keeps the same suspension as before, with MacPherson struts at the front and a five-link independent system at the rear.

In terms of size:
  • Length: 4,395 mm
  • Width: 1,842 mm
  • Height: 1,551 mm
  • Wheelbase: 2,750 mm
That’s up from the current model’s 4,287 mm length and 2,705 mm wheelbase, which could mean more interior or boot space. It also nudges it above rivals like the BYD Dolphin.

New styling touches and colours
There’s an illuminated front emblem and a redesigned front end inspired by MG’s electric roadster, the Cyberster, with a sculpted look and separated headlamps. The overall stance is wider with shorter overhangs to give it a more planted feel.

Two new exterior colours are being introduced:
  • Donglai Purple (东来紫): a metallic purple with a pearlescent effect that changes with the light. “Donglai” means “coming from the East”. It shows a metallic gloss in sunlight and a misty look from other angles. The prototype was spotted in this colour, so it’s not just a studio render anymore.
  • Qingbo Green (清波翠): uses imported European pearlescent pigments for deeper contrast and colour richness.
Interior tech upgrades
Inside, the MG4 will feature the new MG×Oppo cockpit system, which integrates smartphone functions with the car’s interface. It supports:
  • Voice commands
  • App synchronisation
  • Gesture-based handover for navigation
  • Other connected services to make daily driving simpler.
Other highlights include:
  • Column-mounted electronic gear selector
  • Wireless phone charging pad
  • Metallic physical buttons
  • Seats with power adjustment, heating and ventilation
Range rumours and assisted driving
There’s been talk from MG’s brand director of a semi-solid-state battery with up to 800 km range under CLTC testing, but nothing is officially confirmed yet.

MG also says the new MG4 will support L2+ assisted driving, including highway Navigate on Autopilot (NOA), though detailed specs are still under wraps.

Hoping to improve sales
MG4 sales in China have been quite low so far in 2025. This update could help SAIC position the MG4 better against domestic EV rivals like the BYD Dolphin and Volkswagen ID.3.

Looks like they have moved the CCU to the front , unless they are running longer cables to the back end? Maybe its a foreshortened view but the distance from the back door to the rear end seems less, hence the re-positioned charging port ? Like the lit up front logo and the seats look better quality at first glance. Much softer edges and design, would I swap ? Naw!
