CCS Communications Problems

MG5 interloper here. Tried a Tesla supercharger last night, no luck (as expected sadly) but a number of other CCS including Gridserve 350kwh worked fine. Brand new MG5 facelift picked up start of June.

Just sharing in case of interest / use and to note there doesn't appear to be a software issue for our model (not to rub it in, sorry ?)

Which one? Only some are compatible with non-Teslas. Usually they just work.

Unfortunately not for MG5s (and I think ZSs). There's some sort of software issue on those cars that the Tesla towers don't like. It's a bit of a rabbit-hole but seems currently most MG5 Facelifts can't access them.

It was the Harrogate charger which is open to all.

I know the 4 works at Harrogate, as I've charged mine there earlier this year.

Some suggestion this is a relatively recent change, but also that 4s are not affected (only 5s and ZSs). But it's a murky world and anecdotal evidence often contradictory. I only know I've used CCS on Osprey, Geniepoint and Gridserve chargers with no issues, but had a well-known error with the Tesla ones.

There's a video out there of a couple taking an orange Trophy up to the north of Scotland, and they charge at the Tesla supercharger in Aviemore without any trouble.

Got my car back this morning with an update done to the BMS software. I took it to the village charger (ChargePlace Scotland) and put it on the CCS connector, and after its obligatory fail first time (this always happens) connected normally second time of asking and is currently charging up. So they haven't completely buggered up the CCS charging, whatever they did.

Now I'm in two minds whether to go to the nearest motorway service station (Abington, 20 miles away) to see if it will connect to a Gridserve.

You don't happen to have a link do you? And which model Trophy do you recall? I think this is a relatively recent development and people who could use them before no longer can...

Thanks and sorry - confusing things slightly - general vibe is that MG4s are OK while the 5s and ZSs struggle more commonly.

I believe that there must be an issue with one on of my updates on my MG4, I did have issues with all CCS chargers and I was informed that there was a Service Bulletin (the lady said Recall) post a previous update. This update was on the EVCC, I have not tried it on other CCS chargers but it was working on the garage CCS, so I can only assume that it is ok now.

I had no trouble at all since I bought the car in April, other than a single Applegreen connector that didn't like my car - I moved to a Gridserve a few yards away and got charged. However, the dealer seemed to think there was something outstanding - she also said recall, but of course it wasn't technically that. When I got the car back she just said something about the update making sure everything was OK. It's certainly charging on at least one CCS charger, which is reassuring.

I wonder if I missed the update that caused the problem, but got the solution?

Most likely - and I'll be in the same boat, as I've not had any updates since about Feb.

I'm still swithering about driving down to Abington to make sure it charges on a Gridserve, but the weather is foul right now (I just turned the central heating on!) so maybe not today.

P.s. the "old ccs communication problem" I was talking abaut, is caused by heavy charge cables making the plug tilting slightly out on top (where the comunication pins are in the plug). So making sure that is not the problem is like the thing to do. Learned this from Bjørn Nyland on you tube (Tesla Bjørn).

I started the original thread that Rolfe posted above re multiple failed attempts. I didnt say, but I was aware (from Bjorn) of the issues re heavy cable so I was taking up the weight of the cable as I tried to connect. Shouldnt have to do this tho!

I did go to Abington this afternoon and got charged on both Gridserve and Applegreen successfully. Gridserve was absolutely no problem. Applegreen was being annoying about reading people's bank cards (not just me) but when it finally did deign to accept my card it charged the car just fine. That's actually a first for me, on an Applegreen charger.

Very reassuring.

But on the other hand an orange Trophy in the next bay to me didn't connect to the charger at first, but when I unplugged the connector and plugged it in again for them, it connected. Maybe it's the angle when you handle the connector?

Applegreen continues to be unreliable for me - so I tend to avoid them

It seemed to be card reader issues on this occasion, and it was happening to multiple people on multiple chargers. Once my card was accepted, there were no further problems.

The Gridserve was utterly reliable, but it was only 50 Kw, and I can see the attraction in trying to get on the Applegreen ones because they're 175 Kw.
