Thanks for posting this info, I think if I can safely remove this panel, I'm going to see if I can find a power feed for the rear view mirror, and use this to also power a dash cam.You'll see the surround is made up of 2 sections, the right hand side indicated in this picture is the smaller section. This is the one I took off. I put a plastic spudger in between the glass and the panel and levered it away, it popped off fairly easily. You could use a flat knife (regular cutlery, not too sharp) also I guess if you don't have a spudger.
This would save having to run cables from the fuse box. If the larger left plastic planel can also be removed then this would be good to have a look at.
