Lane Assist Trying To Kill Me!

My MG4 Trophy went into the Dealer for the second time last week to try and sort out the LKA issues (over-reactive veering and the LKA switch turning itself back on during a trip even though it had been turned off.
This time the car was in for a 2 day software update and (touch wood) now appears to be behaving itself.

Do you still have to turn it off every trip if you don't want it on, or does it remember the last setting?

This resetting of lane assist after every new cycle seems to vary by manufacturer. I have seen comments that it resets (or has to reset) due to NCAP rules and rating, but for example, on the Tesla Model Y lane assist can be permanently turned off If preferred.

I think it is governed by when the car was type approved or whatever the procedure is. Model Y was released before the cutoff date and MG4 after?

I saw someone today in another thread say his was now staying off after a software update although it had defaulted to on before.

But they did other stuff as well? My LKA update took less than 20 minutes and it was good afterwards.

I think it is governed by when the car was type approved or whatever the procedure is. Model Y was released before the cutoff date and MG4 after?

Exactly. The car has to comply only with standards at the time of launch. So in any Model 3 (or Y, but I can't say from personal experience) the LKA can be turned off completely.

This is faulty behavior then. In the MG4 it is mandatory to turn on by default. Sadly.

That's what I thought. What we really need is a single button to turn it off while driving. The manual says to turn it off "immediately" if it starts to behave erratically, but how can you do that as it's set up at present? So the only safe option in my view is to turn it off every time.

Yes, I still do after I had the same update.

No, if you want to turn it off you have to do so at the start of each drive.

Some of us are lucky! My LKA stays off all the time, even though I've had the update. I never have to turn it off. I think that may be because mine is an earlyish car with very few updates applied (just the lock in and LKA ones as far as I know). I'm holding off other updates as long as possible in case they make LKA default to on!

The reinstall process was lengthy as I gather that they had to go back to MG in China several times.
So this issue can probably be described as a "work in progress" and I think that you are right to take an "if it isn't broken, don't fix it" approach.
However, when they eventually catch up with you and instal a software update I suspect that permanently disabling LKA (requiring the system to be turned off foe every drive) will not be a feature.
The other thing is that why should owners have to disable a safety feature in order to drive safely ? I haven't yet seen a response from MG to explain why this feature (which is advertised in the new vehicle specification) should not work correctly. Just imagine if you bought a different tech product and it would not work as advertised. There would be an uproar and claims for compensation for not providing a product which matched the advertised specification.

Oh, I fully expect them to catch up with me sometime and for it to default to on. I actually thought that would happen when I had the LKA update, but it didn't.

Yep. It would be easy to do. It has configurable buttons on the steering wheel.

On my Alfa it's a physical button on the indicator stalk. Perfect.

Maybe someone working on the OBD tweaks will find a solution for this. It should surely be simple to do if anyone works out how it’s all coded

The left joystick button press isn't currently assigned to any function (AFAIK) ... that would be an ideal candidate for toggling LKA on/off state. (It's not something you're likely to press inadvertently ... when you're toggling ACC speed you're rocking/toggling the joystick, not pressing it).

Doesn’t it switch between functions like the right one does?

I live in a place with a lot of country lanes. When there are ruts filled with water the lane keep assist definitely gets fooled and tries to throw me into a hedge. I try to remember to turn it off as I find it too sensitive and intrusive

Show me where this is documented, or explain it please? On my SE I don't recall pressing the left joystick doing anything.

Sorry, didn’t make it clear.

I couldn’t remember if it did the same thing as the right one.

Pressing the right one changes between the AC control and whatever you’ve set the left star button to do, IIRC, so in mine it changes between the AC and the media control, although I can’t remember if I set those two things or they’re the default.
