Car nearly gave myself (and my Mother in the back of the car) a panic attack the other day.

The last time I gave my Mum a lift there was an unexpected skid when pulling out of a side road (hence her distrust of me/the car).

This time: Coming off a motorway junction onto the trunk Road the car suddenly changed direction violently one way and then another as if skidding.

Fortunately the car righted itself and carried on as normal.

At first I thought it was a skid but now I think it was the LKA.

There are three lanes coming off the motorway junction and it quickly goes down to two with lanes two and three merging. I think this confused the LKA and it tried to do all sorts of things to get back into a lane.

Does that sound familiar to anyone?

LKA is simply not clever enough in 'complicated' situations, hence why mine is still turned off.

In the NCAP test all it had to do was recognise line markings on an arrow straight, well lit and dry road, then nudge the car back towards the middle of the road.

Passed easily.

Even after my update (R59) it still does not do very well in the real world.

I accidentally forgot to cancel the LKA when I got back in the car after getting out to pay at a car wash earlier this week. Some way further down the road something happened that had the following thoughts racing through my head. OMG has the steering gone? Is the car breaking down? Have I had a blowout? What the hell is happening?

Then I realised it was only the LKA. I breathed a sigh of relief, turned the infernal thing off, and that's how it will stay.

FWIW, LKA will not activate if you indicate when changing lanes.

Not breaking the habit of a lifetime there, as discussed on other threads. I was taught to indicate as necessary. But on this occasion I wasn't changing lanes, I was just slightly cutting the corner of a bend on a single-carriageway road, as is normal when there's nothing coming the other way.

It won't no, but if you move accross a bit on a single lane dual carraige way to give a cyclist in a cycle lane a bit more room it will nudge you back towards them, If you make an abrupt move to avoid a truck shedding a tyre tread on a motorway it will nuge you back into it. If it decides that a bitumen seam in the road is a road marking (a major problem in the wet) you will find yourself being "nudged" into a non existent lane, where it then sees the centre line and nudges you back. The system is dreadful.

As Bricktop said, its only been tested on an arrow straight (probabably motorway width) bit of road. It is literally only useful for motorways and even then its questionable and if the road is deserted (e.g. late night, early morning) then indicating is pointless - you are indicating to nobody.

Oh and as for the skid, yes, if you are accelerating briskly around a tight corner the car will exhibit a bit of a hip motion before the various robots pull it back straight. I quite like that actually.

Although I've only had my car a day my observation so far would be that LKA is (if anything) underactive. I have tested crossing lanes numerous times and think I must be the first to report it's dangerous as it does nothing the majority of the time ?

I guess after having driven a Mustang V8 for 9 years as a daily anything else short of high end sports car seems fairly benign

I've got into the habit of looking at the driver's screen before I cross a lane marking to see if the LKA has seen the lines and they are lit on the screen. If they are I either indicate or hang on to the steering wheel tightly, if they aren't I know that it won't do anything.

Yes, until MG release the fix it's best turned off - fortunately R59 makes this simple, swipe down from the top, touch the icon to disable. Better than burying it 5 clicks deep in a sub menu.

Well, if the fix isn't in by the time I have the appointment to get R33 (which apparently has the same facility) in early September, at least after that it'll be easier to switch it off.
