MG4 Reduction Gearbox Oil Leak

Mine is booked in for Tuesday. Dealer had received service bulletin to drain and refill as others have mentioned. I could have had it done tomorrow but can't wait while it's done.

Hi all, I can’t remember who it was a few days back in one of these threads about leaks on the mg 4 and I have looked but can’t find the posting, well it said that the dealer was going to refill the gearbox and add some kind of Dye as well to try and pin point any leak question is did anything come of that action?

So, quick update. The garage have confirmed it is NOT the breather, they thought it was that at first. MG have given them a number of scenarios and tests to go through to find the root cause. So as yet no definitive answer.

At this point MG have had the car for longer then me, but hopeful they will get to the answer soon.

An update. The reduction gearbox should contain 0.85 litre oil. Mine when drained contained 0.75 litre and was still leaking. They originally were told to refiIl to 0.85 exactly and check for leak but as it is leaking with 0.75 that’s been abandoned. The oil they need is due to arrive tomorrow and they will put the dye in it and see where leaking from with UV light. It sounds highly unlikely that this is a breather pipe problem according to the head service guy.

On another note, they gave me an MG 3 loan car which made me want to urgently reevaluate my life choices. A truly awful car. Fortunately for me, I had it for 1 day then the engine management light came on (4000 miles on the clock, that famous MG reliability ?) so they swapped me into a top spec Micra which is actually quite decent.

similar story here, took mine into the dealer this morning and waited, tech said seemed to be coming from the breather, drained some out and cleaned up. Will keep and eye on more leaks...

Any one know how to clean this oil from the drive ?

Let me no if they can because I've tried everything I no that works

If there is a circular, can someone please post it here so we can understand what is going on?

Surely if this is a serious problem, the dealers should be contacting all the customers to review the vehicles, not everyone crawling under your cars to look for evidence. Not everyone reads these forums.
I think it’s very embarrassing for the dealers and the poor folk who have spent a fortune on a new car.
If this is an issue, MG sort it out from your end, or it will cost you big time when all these cars start breaking..
I had my Audi for 12 years before I part exchanged it, and it never soiled my driveway!

Well there may be different issues on different cars or like has been said the plot thickens. I was in for 45 mins and they were sure there was an overfill so have drained and corrected the levels I will keep an eye on my drive now. In terms of the undertray dip which i will mention on the appropriate thread the dealers need feedback from mg before going further. There demo car does have the same issues though so at least they are now aware.

I think it's a red herring too, but to be fair, they are only commenting on what they saw on their car.

Agree mine hadn’t been driven for a couple of days and the stuff still felt oily, just hoping it doesn’t start again now after reading this lot ?‍?

Just a thought - for those thinking of just leaving it to see if it stops on its own - given where it was all going - how well protected are the brakes, battery and HV cables ? Would be handy for some assurance from the dealers on this.

If you are worried about needing to reject the car then you need to register the issue with the dealer in writing stating so, detailing any faults and giving them the opportunity to resolve them.
