Tesla Supercharger Issue MG5 LR

My dealer did this in a few minutes, a very simple update to the EVCC_02 unit.

Whilst it enabled Tesla & other chargers, it did slow down my peak charging rate from 96 to 85 kW.

If you are only doing the EVCC you should be ok. But tbh why go to lengths of buying the kit and setting it all up and then not take advantage in doing the whole suite?

I didn’t previously get to do the TBox update in conjunction with the Infotainment system as that required tracking down separate files to be loaded from a USB stick - but plan to revisit in the coming weeks.
Fair point!

Managed to get a VNCI VDI3 from Ali Express for 104.00 GBP delivered, so will see how I get on.

Please keep us updated, watching with interest.
Will do.

I'm not overly fussed about updating anything else. If it isn't broke, don't fix it etc. I'm otherwise very happy with the car, and I've only had the infotainment need to be restarted via holding down the home key twice in 18 months of ownership.

I'll put the VDI3 on eBay for £50-£60 or so once done so the update will have only set me back £60-£70 all in for the device and software access.

Don't bother listing it on ebay, I'll have that from you.

Maybe worth a new thread for those interested in doing this themselves?

Like @boomish I'm not bothered enough to faff around with dealers and labour fees, but would happily try it myself.

I know of other forums where pieces of specialised equipment just keep getting passed along to the next enthusiast. I'm sure we could come up with something.

Well, the VDI tool arrived today.

Software installation on the laptop was already done, and took about 15 minutes to download and install.

Once in the car, connecting took about 5 minutes to load the vehicle data and show available updates.

The CCU was already up to date. So, when I asked the last dealer to do the EVCC update, it looks like they did the CCU instead 😫

Anyway, I selected the EVCC update, installed (took less than 3 mins), disconnected and drove to a Tesla charger just round the corner.

Worked perfectly!

How dealers can justify the best part of £200 for about 10 minutes work is absolutely scandalous. I understand costs have to be covered, but that's just insane.

Additionally, it's also shocking how even the techs working on the car have no idea what I asking for when asking for the EVCC to be updated.

Regardless, this was a very quick and easy task to do providing you have a VDI tool.

@johnb80 drop me a PM if you want it. Selling for £60 delivered 👍 Looks like @boomish will have it after you as well so we can all get the update done for relatively limited costs each 😊

@xblackwolf90, that's great that it worked well for you, like you say anything to avoid lining the dealer's pockets for ten minutes work!

Would you mind sharing the link for the diagnostic interface you bought? Just in my experience buying copies of other marques equivalent the quality can be variable so would be good to buy the same one.

This is the one I sent for:

I ordered last Saturday at about 10PM and it arrived today (Sunday) so only a week to get here.

Tip: if you have a bank or credit card that has no foreign transaction fees, pay in USD and it's a bit cheaper. It's £114.53 paying in GBP. Paying in USD it'll be £112. Hardly a huge saving but I'll take it!

For just an EVCC update you'll only need 1 hour access to SIPS as it's a small update. I paid for 24 hours but definitely didn't need it. No need for the battery charger either.

Almost every module on the car had updates available if you fancy doing the lot, but everything is working fine for me so I didn't bother. I'm very much for "if it ain't broke don't fix it".

Couple of notes to avoid the few moments of panic I had:

1) As soon as the update is ready and you click "Next", the car immediately turns off and all screens go black.
2) Once the update is done, the car powers back on and an "invalid key" message appears on screen, presumably as SIPS powers the car on rather than using the key. Powering off and on again did the trick.

Well done great job, I totally agree and have been saying for the past 2 years or more MG have been totally unfair on this issue with the owners. When it was first raised a couple of years back when Tesla opened up some of there network, MG was to do the updates for free and in fact Chorley MG did my FL trophy model free of charge. Time In workshop less than 1hr, maybe I was lucky but then shortly after, MG changed the tune and said it was to charge. Shame on them.
As you have proved here it takes a very short time to do and some dealers are just cashing in. It could be done as part of a service visit, which some have had, but many had been refused. So l'm very pleased that you have found a way around it.

Thanks!

In my view, MG should be covering this under warranty.

As they're not, I wouldn't expect a dealer to book me in just for this and do it for free as a standalone job. As a standalone booking in I wouldn't mind £50-£60 or so to cover the admin of booking in, doing the update, taking payments etc.

As part of a service though, 5 mins of extra work surely just seems like decent customer service, particularly as they may well have SIPS connected anyway.

Still, at least there's a workaround and we know the dealers are making a right wedge of a tiny job.

I love my MG5, but my dealer experience in regards to aftersales so far has been relatively poor. I'm not sure whether to head for an S5 next time or shift over to an Omoda E5; Omoda opened a dealer and aftersales just round the corner from me. Both local MG dealers have changed to other brands so it's also a 35 mile round trip to my nearest one now.

Thinking aloud: is the VDI tool also the missing link for programming a blank key?

Could do with a spare...

Seems to be, although I haven't attempted it myself.

This thread has discussion about keys and has the guides I followed:

New keys seem to be fine, but you can't re-program a second hand one.
