battery

An electric battery is a source of electric power consisting of one or more electrochemical cells with external connections for powering electrical devices.
When a battery is supplying power, its positive terminal is the cathode and its negative terminal is the anode. The terminal marked negative is the source of electrons that will flow through an external electric circuit to the positive terminal. When a battery is connected to an external electric load, a redox reaction converts high-energy reactants to lower-energy products, and the free-energy difference is delivered to the external circuit as electrical energy. Historically the term "battery" specifically referred to a device composed of multiple cells; however, the usage has evolved to include devices composed of a single cell.Primary (single-use or "disposable") batteries are used once and discarded, as the electrode materials are irreversibly changed during discharge; a common example is the alkaline battery used for flashlights and a multitude of portable electronic devices. Secondary (rechargeable) batteries can be discharged and recharged multiple times using an applied electric current; the original composition of the electrodes can be restored by reverse current. Examples include the lead-acid batteries used in vehicles and lithium-ion batteries used for portable electronics such as laptops and mobile phones.
Batteries come in many shapes and sizes, from miniature cells used to power hearing aids and wristwatches to, at the largest extreme, huge battery banks the size of rooms that provide standby or emergency power for telephone exchanges and computer data centers.
Batteries have much lower specific energy (energy per unit mass) than common fuels such as gasoline. In automobiles, this is somewhat offset by the higher efficiency of electric motors in converting electrical energy to mechanical work, compared to combustion engines.

    Battery problem advice

Last week inadvertently we fully drained the battery on our ZS Ev. Charged it overnight on our Rolec charging unit. Following day car wouldn't go into the ready mode and to cut a long story short vehicle towed into our local dealer. 3 days later its still there and the garage still attempting to...

    12 volt battery problems

I was charging yesterday at a rapid charger. It got to 94% and then realised I was going no higher. The charger had stopped and unlocked the lead. I thought nothing of it but the car would then not restart. Tried switching it on and off a few times then realised that the 12 Volt battery was...

MG5 Software and HV battery disconnected warning

On two occasions whist static I have had the "HV Battery disconnected" warning illuminate on my MG5. On one occasion I was in the way of other vehicles and had to select N and push the car out of the way. Not great in a 21 reg car. I took my car to the selling dealer they checked that out, along...

Range issues - Filing a "Warranty Claim" on our Battery or "Rejecting" the purchase

Hi everyone - I'm keen to hear if anyone has had a similar experience with their range cars, or if we are expecting too much from it. In essence - we don't feel the car's range is as advertised, and are therefore beginning the process of rejecting the purchase (but first attempting to file a...

Dead battery after side lights left on all day

Did a 180 mile round trip last night with a super charge in between at the service station close to Stsnstead. Got home this morning with 21 miles left on the battery, think I was so tired I must’ve either not switched the car off or left the side lights on but the lights were on this evening...

    Battery balance on public charger

Hi everyone, Looking at getting a ZS EV within the next few weeks, coming from an ICE car so it will be my first EV. I've read a fair bit about battery balancing/equalisation charging on these forums and in the handbook. I don't have a drive, so can't get a home charger; so will be relying...

    Battery balancing

I've had my MG for nearly three months now and have travelled about 3500 kms. I have never charged it to 100%, and I have only ever charged it using 15amps input from my charger. A simple question, do I wait until it tells me to do a battery balance, or do I charge it to 100% and try and make...

    Battery Inbalance

Hi, I have owned my ZS since December, 3 weeks ago after using on a 7kw charger at my local supermarket the car reported HV battery shut off and eventually had to towed away and back to the dealership. They have draining the battery and and recharging it since then and after speaking to them...

MG ZS Aux Battery getting depleted

Hi I have had my MG ZS EV Exclusive since Dec 2019, and more than once I have found the Aux Battery ( 12V) fully depleted while parked in my driveway I've noticed that in less than a week ( some times 3-4 days) the voltage ( I have a bluetooth meter attached to the battery) goes as low as 12V...
  13. Battery Range Reduced after a Rapid Charge

I bought my MG ZS EV Exclusive last September and thanks to Chorley MG in Burnley, who I have my maintenance contract with, the car has been updated as and when required, the last update being back in February 2021. I have hardly been anywhere since the last lockdown and the car as of yesterday...

    Balancing Battery

Hi all, i'd like to ask a question about balancing my car battery on my ZS EV, I'm trying to undertake a balance charge BUT I'm not sure if the car has actually equalised. What's the actual process of balancing the battery? Does the car need to be in ready mode (green) on the dash with...

Charger reading battery percentage from the car

I noticed when DC charging recently (on first proper long journey), that the charger knows (it displays it) what percentage the battery is. Clearly it is something that is and can be communicated via the type 2 cable. So, why don't our installed home "chargers" read it and are able to manage...

Does HV battery charging charge up a flat 12v battery?

I wondered. If your 12v battery is flat does connecting to a HV charger charge it up or does the 12v need to be charged up first before the HV charger will work?

Don’t leave your jump start battery in the boot!

My friend left her lights on and drained the 12v battery on her ZS. She used the key to get into the car but couldn’t open the tailgate to get to her jump start pack. I suppose she could have dropped the rear seats down? but she didn’t think of that. The pack is now kept in the passenger part of...

    High voltage battery disconnected

Apologies for another potentially silly question..... I had 3 young children asleep in the car today so I decided to sit with them on my drive for a few minutes to let them sleep. I left the air conditioning running as it was soooo hot outside. After only 4 or 5 minutes a yellow warning sign...
