charger

A battery charger, or recharger, is a device that stores energy in a battery by running an electric current through it. The charging protocol (how much voltage or current for how long, and what to do when charging is complete) depends on the size and type of the battery being charged. Some battery types have high tolerance for overcharging (i.e., continued charging after the battery has been fully charged) and can be recharged by connection to a constant voltage source or a constant current source, depending on battery type. Simple chargers of this type must be manually disconnected at the end of the charge cycle. Other battery types use a timer to cut off when charging should be complete. Other battery types cannot withstand over-charging, becoming damaged (reduced capacity, reduced lifetime), over heating or even exploding. The charger may have temperature or voltage sensing circuits and a microprocessor controller to safely adjust the charging current and voltage, determine the state of charge, and cut off at the end of charge.
Chargers may elevate the output voltage proportionally with current to compensate for impedance in the wires.A trickle charger provides a relatively small amount of current, only enough to counteract self-discharge of a battery that is idle for a long time. Some battery types cannot tolerate trickle charging; attempts to do so may result in damage. Lithium-ion batteries cannot handle indefinite trickle charging.
Slow battery chargers may take several hours to complete a charge. High-rate chargers may restore most capacity much faster, but high rate chargers can be more than some battery types can tolerate. Such batteries require active monitoring of the battery to protect it from overcharging. Electric vehicles ideally need high-rate chargers. For public access, installation of such chargers and the distribution support for them is an issue in the proposed adoption of electric cars.

    MG4 Granny Lead - AU 8A vs UK 10A ?

the MG granny charger that comes with the Australian MG4's is only rated and outputting 8A which is annoying considering our outlets are usually on 20A circuits and more than happy to do at least 10A and 15A with the correct socket. any chance someone could take a photo of the internals of a UK...

Charger locking problems - how widespread?

I use the egg chargers at my work during the day, however about half the time something goes wrong and I can't unplug my type 2 cable from the charger. The only way to fix it is for security to turn it off and on again. It's not a problem with the car or cable as other people are having the...

    Home charger recommendations

Hi, I'm a week away from taking ownership of a new ZS Long range, and don't want to spend too much on a charger. Recommendations? In a normal week, I drive about 120 miles. Could I get away with a 3 pin plug charger? It says on the MG website that they can over heat. Is that the car or the...

I have a 2021 model, so phone connects via lightning cable. Is there a cheap wireless charger available, so that my iPhone 8+ could just sit in that tray in front of the gear knob? Would it still talk to Car Play without the cable?

Morning all, I've had a strange problem with my Rolec charger over the last couple of months, sometimes it works.. sometimes it doesn't at the moment it's firmly in the doesn't work stage. Rapid Charger connects but fails to charge. It communicates to the extent that it can report the MG5 SOC but disconnects before charging. Seen this ?

When connected to Rapid Chargers I frequently find that the charger can communicate with the MG5 to the extent that it can report the EV's State Of Charge but disconnects before providing any charging power. I have now experienced this with a number of charge suppliers where the customer...

    Informational: EV units explained

Hi, this came up in another discussion and may help people who are bit confused about all this talk about killer-wots and owwww-ers. The experienced will already know it. Energy is measured in Joules (J). Power is measured in Joules-per-second (J/s), which is also known as Watts (W), a...

MG4 support for smart tariffs and charger integration
