mot

The MOT test (or simply MOT) is an annual test of vehicle safety, roadworthiness aspects and exhaust emissions required in the United Kingdom for most vehicles over three years old. In Northern Ireland the equivalent requirement applies after four years. The requirement does not apply to vehicles used only on various small islands with no convenient connection "to a road in any part of Great Britain"; no similar exemption is listed at the beginning of 2014 for Northern Ireland, which has a single inhabited island, Rathlin. The MOT test was first introduced in 1960 as a few basic tests of a vehicle and now covers twenty different parts or systems on or in the vehicle. The name derives from the Ministry of Transport, a defunct government department, which was one of several ancestors of the current Department for Transport, but is still officially used. The MOT test certificates are currently issued in Great Britain under the auspices of the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) (formed as a result of the merger between the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA)), an executive agency of the Department for Transport, and before 1 April 2014 by VOSA. Certificates in Northern Ireland are issued by the Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA). The test and the pass certificate are often referred to simply as the "MOT".
More than 23,500 local car repair garages throughout England, Scotland and Wales, employing more than 65,800 testers, are authorised to perform testing and issue certificates. In principle, any individual in Great Britain can apply to run a MOT station, although in order to gain an authorisation from DVSA, both the individual wanting to run the station, as well as the premises, need to meet minimal criteria set out on the government's website, within the so-called VT01 form.In Northern Ireland, tests are performed exclusively at the DVA's own test centres, although currently there is an open project investigating bringing Northern Ireland into line with the rest of the United Kingdom.

    Servicing Costs

Hi all I bought a used MG5 last year from a dealer (2022, currently done 36k miles). Booking in first annual service and absolutely staggered by the prices. Is this typical? Bayliss MG Gloucester. How can a 4 year service possibly cost the best part of £400. Particularly given one of the...

Non-MG Service Centre & software updates

A local garage has undertaken my first MOT. Although not an MG dealer, they said they could also install software updates. Has anyone else ever used a non-MG service shop to install software updates and if so, whether the experience was a good or bad one?

    ZS 2021 43,000 mile service £467 Rip-off?

So, this is Baylis in Gloucester. Just seemed like an awful lot to me for a 1 hour service while I wait, and an MOT. A/C filter. Key battery. Brake fluid + screen wash. Very grateful of course that their vehicle health check report offers me a Green tick mark for the Engine Oil level and...

MG HS PHEV Trophy - Service Plans

    First MOT, phase one MG4s

What it says on the tin. The phase one cars are going through their first MOTs now and a couple of people have had problems. This is to try to gauge how common these actually are, maybe get people thinking about a pre-MOT check before something suddenly rears its head five minutes before that...

MZ ZS EV May 2023, software updates

My ZS EV LR (2023) is due its first MOT in May 2026. I’ve checked the firmware and it says R16, though after digging around a little bit I understand there has since been a R25 and a R27. I’m inclined to ask the dealer to do the updates to the latest version just so it is up to date, though...

So the wife and I got up at the crack of dawn to go pick up the new car (well about 8.30) as we have to drive about 7.5 miles. Got there about 10.00 the handover took about 1.5 hours and covered all queries. The s5 drives absolutely brilliantly and we checked that all the functions worked...

    Suspension Bushing

Is the suspension bushing a warranty item or just classed as wear and tear? Reason I ask is my MG5 is coming up to 3 years old and it got an advisory on it's first MOT for "Nearside Front Suspension arm pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement" . Now the garage I had it...

Would you buy an MG5 with 7 MOTs before it was 3 years old?

I've just been looking for MG EVs and I've found an MG5 registered June 2022 with multiple MOT entries on the gov.uk website starting from Oct 2022, five months from new registration. But there's more (below). How can this be? I thought maybe it was a taxi but they still have first test at 3...

    Airbag alarm triggered.

The car (MG4 SE) has been triggering this alarm for the past 2 years. has been in 5 times to sort but the fix doesn't last. Is in at the minute for 3 year service,MOT and to fix alarm. Will have been in 2 weeks tomorrow and the net result is MOT failure because they have been unable to fix it...

    Failed first MOT

My 72 plate MG5 (pre-facelift) just failed its first MOT on both rear coil springs broken. I know exactly where it happened too - on the road between Longhorsley and the A1 in Northumberland (tried to include a link, but links don't seem to work here). The road bottoms out really sharply there...

Hi there, on my MG4 trophy ive got a slight crack in the undertray of the car towards the front on bottom of car. Nothing dragging or seriously exposed. MG4 UK - 3rd Service - 1st MOT

I've already rang my dealer to book-in for my 3rd service (Paul Rigby, UK) (purchashed a 3 year service plan for around £13/month incl. 1st MOT), and they have batted me away until late July. Nevertheless just wondering if one should ask for the rear dripping tray? (on warranty, or is it too...

So long and thanks for all the fish!

Just wanted to post on here one last time. Been rather quiet of late but I do pop in every now and then and watch the podcasts. It has now been 4 years since I took delivery of my MG ZS EV. It went back on Friday as my PCH had come to an end. It has been a belter of a car. Reliable, smooth, and...

3 Year Service - Yay or Nay?

Hi all. My MG5 is coming up to 3 years old. I've only done 12,500 miles to date - no long trips to France this year! I've done annual servicing and this year MOT is due for the first time. Given that I forked out for a 2 year / 20,000 mile service (fairly major one) last year I am seriously...

    3rd service and MOT

Had the 3rd low mileage service and MOT done today at RRG in Stockport (the dealership nearest to me doesn’t offer the low mileage service). Pleased to see the SOH is still 100%, but I have never had to rapid charge. Only issues on MOT were the front tyres being down to 3mm so getting close to...
