Cold weather motorway mi/kWh?

Having had my MG4 Trophy for around 3 months now, i have been getting an average of 3.6 mi/kWh from my 50 mile round commute, of mostly A/B road driving.

I am planning on using it for a snowboard trip to Austria (St. Anton) in February.

What sort of mi/kWh should i expect at 70mph at say 0 Degrees with heating on?

I've been doing some research and seems there are plenty of chargers on route, at 1/3 of the price of UK rapid chargers!


Also, has anyone had any experience with your MG4 on snow? what does it drive like? I have a set of Michelin Cross Climate 4's ready to go on.

Go for a worst case scenario at 1.5-2.0miles / kWh (i.e. your battery percentage left in miles) - the worst run I've ever had was ~ 150 miles on a full charge (standard SE) - at 70mph on a cold day. Best was ~ 220 miles in summer at 60mph hypermiling behind a lorry on the closest cruise control.

I assume you have a Trophy LR and not an ER?
With my LR I get around 180-190 miles charging to 80% during winter, and around 230 -240 miles during summer.
My mls/kWh are higher than your averages, at around 3.4 to 3.6 (except for exceptionally cold weather when I've seen it drop as low as 2.7) during winter and 4.2 to 4.5 during summer. I tend to drive around 60MPH on motorways, It does make a difference to the energy consumed as mathematically energy consumed is a square of the speed.
My tips for better energy performance would be to use the heated seats and steering wheel, and keep the heater at a lower temperature. Mrs EvTek also opts for a wooley hat and a knee blanket....bless her in keeping my energy figures up! Each to their own to improve winter energy performance.

I can't remember ever getting below 3.1 travelling at 70mph on the A1 from around Cambridge up to Scotland in winter with heating and AC on. (Trophy LR)

You will also notice a difference just by dropping from 70mph down to 60mph and have to balance the efficiency benefit from this against the addition to the journey time.

That is correct, you'll be fine with M+S there. I lived and worked in Austria for more than 5 years, lots of rubbish spouted by some who haven't a clue about central European countries let alone set foot in one or even driven in one. Winter tyres are better but legally you'll be ok.

That will be another dig at me then, didn't realise you worked for MG Austria before moving to Cyprus. And just for info since I was the one who mentioned winter tyres it definitely was the law when I was stationed in Germany which last time I looked was central Europe.
To be fair that was before the evolution of all seasons and the 90's

In cold weather im getting about 2.8 miles/kw it could be slightly hier in long runs.
Both heated seats tak0.08 kw and heated steering wheel 0.04
Using the heated steering wheel (and heated seats) has a very minimal impact on the MG4's driving range, especially when used instead of or alongside a lower main climate control setting.
Efficiency Tip: To maximize efficiency in cold weather, it is recommended to use the heated seats and steering wheel to warm the occupants directly, rather than relying solely on the high-power cabin heater to warm the entire air volume of the car.

My 135 mile trip at 1° yesterday morning gave 2.7 miles per kWh at an average speed of 57mph (ACC set at 65mph) which was 125 miles of motorway with car AC temperature set at 28° and fan speed 1.

Arrived at the Tesla SUC with 4 miles range left on my SE SR.

Just because something is legal, doesn’t make it the right choice though, I always went for full winter tyres when I still frequented Switzerland. A set of tyres might not be cheap, but neither is the car they’ll help keep on the road.

There may have been significant advances in all season tyres since then, but back then winter tyres where a different compound from summer tyres, so combining them just wouldn’t really work. You can combine milk and orange juice and still have a drink, but it won’t be any good.

Funnily enough I didn’t sell tyres until I moved to Australia, and in our part we don’t need winter tyres, so I have no knowledge of them other than that of a mostly uninterested consumer.

For 34 mountainous departments in France from Nov-March you must either carry snow chains /socks for the driving wheels , and use them where applicable or have full winter tyres on all four wheels. ( 3pmsf ) MS tyres will need the chains /socks . If you get stuck or have an accident with non approved equipment the law and insurance companies will take a very dim view of your indiscretions.

You never can really forecast the future .... you could set up a winter tyre import business as a future investment. Should the weather change and with a bit of bribery to Cypriot officials you'd clean up!

You're right on how good all season tyres are now, in one of the Tyre review videos it said that if the Michelin Cross Climates had been tested in the winter tyre test they would have finished mid table.

I'm getting on well with Goodyear all-seasons, after having changed my tyres twice a year for good winter ones since 2010.

Although I came here to say, maybe 2.2-2.5 miles/kwh.
