I might be the one living under a rock, but the missus just got her rego bill and on the envelope it says all hybrid and ev cars in WA will need to display the blue EV tags (similar to some other states) from January 2026. Not sure how else I would’ve found out seeing as my rego won’t come through until October 2026… typical government communication.

Not only us that's got a Dumb government, then.

For electric vehicles, the label is a retroreflective blue equilateral triangle with "EV" in white capital letters. The sides of the triangle are 30 mm long, and the letters are at least 8 mm high. This label is affixed to a 1 mm thick metal plate and is required to be displayed on both the front and rear vehicle licence plates for electric vehicles built or modified on or after 1 January 2019 [1].
You can order electric vehicle labels online or enquire at your local automotive store. The cost for a set of two labels starts from around $10. Please note that these labels are not available from Driver and Vehicle Services centres, regional Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure offices, or agents [1].

It's a safety thing so emergency services are aware there's a big battery in the vehicle.

When is this commencing?​

The requirements will commence on 1 January 2026. However, there will be a 12 month transitional period with enforcement from the WA Police Force and Authorised Inspection Stations for not displaying the labels not commencing until 1 January 2027.

The Winnie has two LPG tanks, the rules say you are supposed to have an LPG tag for each tank ..... if I eventually manage to convert it to hybrid, there will need to be room for yet another tag ..... maybe they'll come up with an all inclusive tag, "if it's on fire, run"

How do you attach them? There's something on the DOT website about voiding the plate warranty if you damage it, but I presume you can't just double sided tape the tag as that isn"t "securely enough".

In NSW when you buy an EV (or change the number plates) the plates come with the blue triangle printed on for you.

I think it's demeaning for us pure BEV owners to see them on those cheap imitation EVs commonly referred to as HEV and PHEVs
