charging

A charging station, also called an EV charger or electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), is a piece of equipment that supplies electrical power for charging plug-in electric vehicles (including hybrids, neighborhood electric vehicles, trucks, buses, and others).
Although batteries can only be charged with DC power, most electric vehicles have an onboard AC-to-DC converter that allows them to be plugged into a standard household AC electrical receptacle. Inexpensive low-power public charging stations will also provide AC power, known as "AC charging stations". To facilitate higher power charging, which requires much larger AC-to-DC converters, the converter is built into the charging station instead of the vehicle, and the station supplies already-converted DC power directly to the vehicle, bypassing the vehicle's onboard converter. These are known as "DC charging stations". Most fully electric car models can accept both AC and DC power.
Charging stations provide connectors that conform to a variety of standards. DC charging stations are commonly equipped with multiple connectors to be able to supply a wide variety of vehicles.
Public charging stations are typically found street-side or at retail shopping centers, government facilities, and other parking areas.

    Charging regime

Quick question, how often do you charge your car? We only have a granny charger so far (outdoor socket, wired directly into our consumer unit) and it charges around 15% each night during the cheap rate 5 hour slot. This means several consecutive nights to get the battery to 80%. If we have no...

MG4 Trophy: Idiot’s Guide to Public Charging?

We got the MG just before Christmas and are loving it. Public charging is still a bit of a mystery to us though - sometimes it starts, other times it doesn’t, although I can now get the charge to start almost every time. Is there a simple step by step guide to what you need to do? I appreciate...

    DC charger won't work

Hi! My MG4 luxury edition from October 2023 will suddenly not charge with DC charging, only AC. It's -5 degrees Celsius outside and I live only 400 meter from a DC charging station. Could it have something to do with a cold battery? when I try to DC charge I get following error code: 'HV...

    Free Tesla Charging

Tesla has tweeted “To celebrate the continued opening of our network to all EVs, non-Tesla EVs get their first Supercharging session for free until Jan 6, 2024” NB I assume this is just for their open chargers. Yesterday I tried their Supercharger at Luton and topped up 38 kWh in less than 25...

    Consecutive night charging

Happy New Year everyone! I have a question about charging. My car was quite low on Monday night so I put it on to schedule charge overnight, 3.5 hours. I wouldn’t expect it to get to 80% but I didn’t use the car yesterday so left it connected and felt sure it would charge again between the...

Charging inaccuracy when charging to 80%?

Yesterday I charged the car from 30-80% using an Egg/PhoenixWorks charger at work. No apparent issues. The car said it stopped charging at 80%, about 45mins before I disconnected it, and the meter said 80%. It wasn't charging when I got to it as neither the charge light on the car nor the...

Charging MG4 Trophy LR, how much do you get at home in 4 hrs?

Hi, This is MG4 specific - just trying to decide what type of charger to go for at home, external 13A socket or 7kW EV charger? Would like to know what others experience is. I have an MG4 Trophy long-range (not extended). Currently use the 13A charger that came with the car, looks like I...

    Charging question

I have an Ohme Home Pro wall charger at home. The app allows scheduled charging. You choose the percentage charge you want and by when, and the app does the rest. The MG4 also allows scheduled charging. I've set it via the infotainment screen to charge in the 2330-0530 window only, to match my...

    Slow charging overnight at home

Hi all, I have a 2022 ZS Trophy LR, and a SyncEV chargepoint at home. I use Octopus Go, with the SyncEV taking care of the scheduling. That part works fine, with the car taking a charge between 0030-0430 as expected. What is concerning me is that the rate of charge has been lower than expected...

Help with 22kW "charger", cable etc

Hi, forgive me for my ignorance but just had my Xpower deliver and have a 22kW charger Am I right in thinking the charging cable supplied will only allow a slow charge of 7kW rather than the 22kW rating? I have bought a 3 phase 32A 22kW rated cable that is due to be delivered will this now...

    Octopus Intelligent Go says No

I applied to Octopus Intelligent Go and was told they could not yet take on my model, a 2023 MG5 Trophy Estate Long Range. It seems strange that other MG owners are reporting being taken on. Are the charging configurations for MG models that different? I am assuming my problem is the model...

    Charging cover gets water filled

MG LR March 23. 11kw 3ph capability. The flap when opened for charging gets a pool of water at the bottom on the recess. There is a hole that looks to be for drainage that seems to be firmly blanked off 20mm or so down the hole. Seems like an issue in the plastic moulding and i might have to...

Disappointing GRIDSERVE, Weird GeniePoint and great but expensive MFG experience today

210 miles mostly motorway trip today from London to the Peak District. Planned a mid way stop to refuel our bodies, recharge the battery and empty our bladders. On paper Gridserve Watford made perfect sense: at the M1 services, plenty of chargers, all 150kW + , what could go wrong? Arrived...

    Charging Socket Lights

The lights in our MG4 charging socket are red. I have a recollection they used to be blue. Am I dreaming or are our lights an odd colour? If they did change colour I think it may have coincided with getting the tow ball fitted which would have involved fiddling with the electrics.
