driving

Driving is the controlled operation and movement of a vehicle, including cars, motorcycles, trucks, buses, and bicycles. Permission to drive on public highways is granted based on a set of conditions being met and drivers are required to follow the established road and traffic laws in the location they are driving. The word driving, has etymology dating back to the 15th century and has developed as what driving has encompassed has changed from working animals in the 15th to automobiles in the 1800s. Driving skills have also developed since the 15th century with physical, mental and safety skills being required to drive. This evolution of the skills required to drive have been accompanied by the introduction of driving laws which relate to not only the driver but the driveability of a car.
The term "driver" originated in the 15th century, referring to the occupation of driving working animals like pack or draft horses. It later applied to electric railway drivers in 1889 and motor-car drivers in 1896. The world's first long-distance road trip by automobile occurred in 1888 when Bertha Benz drove a Benz Patent-Motorwagen from Mannheim to Pforzheim, Germany. Driving requires both physical and mental skills, as well as an understanding of the rules of the road.
In many countries, drivers must pass practical and theoretical driving tests to obtain a driving license. Physical skills required for driving include proper hand placement, gear shifting, pedal operation, steering, braking, and operation of ancillary devices. Mental skills involve hazard awareness, decision-making, evasive maneuvering, and understanding vehicle dynamics. Distractions, altered states of consciousness, and certain medical conditions can impair a driver's mental skills.
Safety concerns in driving include poor road conditions, low visibility, texting while driving, speeding, impaired driving, sleep-deprived driving, and reckless driving. Laws regarding driving, driver licensing, and vehicle registration vary between jurisdictions. Most countries have laws against driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. Some countries impose annual renewals or point systems for driver's licenses to maintain road safety.

    Transferring a private reg?

Hi, I'll be collecting my first ever brand new car MG4 as soon as physically possible beginning of March (1st?). It will come on a '24 plate. As it is the first time of buying new in 43 years of driving I've bought a private reg to mark the auspicious occasion (again, a first for me). I intend...

Resonating bass cabin noise when driving

Hey, first of all . My native language is Dutch so sorry in advance for spelling errors. I have the MG4 Lux 2023 model and I have driven almost 5000 km with it and I am very happy with the car. But only 1 thing is very annoying. When I am driving on a well paved road (asphalt) it is fine. But...

Indications for using battery heating (now the weather is getting colder)

Does the bug affect cabin pre-heat, battery pre-heat or both? I decided to do a battery pre-heat this morning. Started it 90 minutes before departure; app said it was on. Looked again 30 minutes before departure and app said it was off.

Yes you can drive through big puddles.

I accidentally drove through one about twice as deep as this later on. I think it's only because of the weight of the car I kept traction. :)

    Driving with one pedal

If you set the setting for driving with 1 pedal on a fully loaded MG, this setting does not work, this setting only works when you apparently have 85% battery capacity. Is it correct that this setting is completely linked to energy recovery because it seems that if this setting works, it...

    Anyone crashed their car?

A brief synopsis..... Travelling along a NSL road in my new Volvo V70 with less than 2000 miles on the clock. A car pulls out of a junction (without looking) to go into a yard. (That's the entrance just behind where my car came to rest) I was doing easily circa 60mph approaching the...

Have this happened to anyone else? After locking the car and unlocking it again it was fine. Got all kind of error messages before locking it.

    MG4 Managing Expectations

In November 2023 my wife took the plunge and ordered the Trophy LR, following my advice to order the one with “all the toys on it”. I love cars and although I'm not “wealthy”, in 2003 I was the first in the UK according to BMW to order Dakar yellow on my convertible M3 individual. BMW said “I...

    Sticky steering in CruiseControl

Hello fellow MG5 Evers, has anyone noticed whilst driving in CruiseControl that steering is somewhat sticky, i.e. needs more effort to turn the steeringwheel. Thanks in advance for any enlightenment. P.S. I bought and fitted some 80W LED headlight bulbs, my word are they bright, really pleased...

    MG4 Restricted speed - weird

Big shot in the dark that anyone else has experienced this, but worth a go. My drive home involves a short blast up a dual carriageway from a set of lights, bit of a Grand Prix to be honest. Twice now I’ve floored the car up it and it’s resolutely refused to do more than 71-75mph. It’s not a...

    Emergency S.O.S. Heads Up

Trying to put an interior light on while driving, I hit the SOS emergency button by mistake (should it really be so near the light controls?). Immediate panic and freeze on my part, followed by total embarrassment when I had to admit my mistake and allow the emergency operator to end my call. A...

Can you legally drive your EV in the bus lanes 24/7 in your area?

Some cities seem to allow driving in bus lanes 24/7 for EV’s. Not sure how widespread this is. Of course all users can drive in the bus lane outside limited times - if it is a bus lane that has these time limitations on the sign. Although most users don’t know this. Does your area allow EV’s...

    Driving In The Floods

Last week I had to drive during the heavy flooding, due to hospital trips, and so I was driving through flooded roads approximately 30 cm (1 foot) deep in water. No major problems and most other drivers were being sensible in their speed through the water. When I washed the car at the weekend...

    Conservative driving...

Lately I've been driving my ZS very much like a granny to see how low I can get the power consumption. During my drive last night with aircon set to 23c (26c outside), normal mode, with no passengers and trying to keep pedal input under 20% I was able to get it down to 9.9kwh/100kms, after...

    Traffic Jam Assist

We drove from a bit North of Sydney to West of Brisbane (circa 1000 km). We encountered two significant traffic jams on the motorway outside of Brisbane. I set the cruise control to the posted speed limit. The traffic jam assist was terrific! It made the stop and go driving much less...

    One Pedal Driving

Hi, we’ve had our MG4 Extended Range for just over a month and I am starting to use the one pedal drive mode but would love someone to tell me the advantages. Also, when sat on a slight incline the other day waiting to turn up a hill I noticed the car was using 3% power - why? Thanks

Petition to get MG to allow drivers to preset driving preferences

There are over 1000 members on this group.
