fast charger

A battery charger, recharger, or simply charger, is a device that stores energy in a battery by running an electric current through it. The charging protocol (how much voltage or current for how long, and what to do when charging is complete) depends on the size and type of the battery being charged. Some battery types have high tolerance for overcharging (i.e., continued charging after the battery has been fully charged) and can be recharged by connection to a constant voltage source or a constant current source, depending on battery type. Simple chargers of this type must be manually disconnected at the end of the charge cycle. Other battery types use a timer to cut off when charging should be complete. Other battery types cannot withstand over-charging, becoming damaged (reduced capacity, reduced lifetime), over heating or even exploding. The charger may have temperature or voltage sensing circuits and a microprocessor controller to safely adjust the charging current and voltage, determine the state of charge, and cut off at the end of charge. Chargers may elevate the output voltage proportionally with current to compensate for impedance in the wires.A trickle charger provides a relatively small amount of current, only enough to counteract self-discharge of a battery that is idle for a long time. Some battery types cannot tolerate trickle charging; attempts to do so may result in damage. Lithium-ion batteries cannot handle indefinite trickle charging. Slow battery chargers may take several hours to complete a charge. High-rate chargers may restore most capacity much faster, but high rate chargers can be more than some battery types can tolerate. Such batteries require active monitoring of the battery to protect it from overcharging. Electric vehicles ideally need high-rate chargers. For public access, installation of such chargers and the distribution support for them is an issue in the proposed adoption of electric cars.

Battery degraded by approx. 20 miles in 10 months

Hi all, I bought my 44.5 kWh ZS EV (2020 model) about 10 months ago and last Summer I charged it a several times using a fast charger (BP Pulse) and achieved figures like 148 miles and 152 miles at 100% capacity. During the Winter months I didn’t travel very far so tended to just top up with...

Good evening not a big problem but getting used to it. Who else thinks it is so annoying that the fast charging of the cable only comes loose so late? The fast charger had been indicating for some time: disconnect the charging plug, but it was still stuck.

    Slow charging on fast charger

I noticed with my MG4 Long Range that when charging at a fast charger, the speed is not exceeding some 62 kW and that not even continuously. Outside temperature was some 2 C and the initial charge of the battery was 17 %. Can anybody tell me if this disappointing speed is normal with an MG4? Is...

Rapid Charger connects but fails to charge. It communicates to the extent that it can report the MG5 SOC but disconnects before charging. Seen this ?

When connected to Rapid Chargers I frequently find that the charger can communicate with the MG5 to the extent that it can report the EV's State Of Charge but disconnects before providing any charging power. I have now experienced this with a number of charge suppliers where the customer...

MG5 will not charge at a fast charger

Hi, We have an MG5 (registered January 2021 but it is a 70 plate) and it will not charge at a fast charger. No problems charging it at home or at a 7kW podpoint charger. We bought this second hand in March and the 90 day warranty is now up. Does anyone have any ideas as to why it will not...

Fast Charger Cable Not Included - Huh?

Does anyone else think it’s a bit silly that the fast charger cable is not included when you are effectively spending £30k on a vehicle. Almost like the ‘batteries not included’ cop out. Makes me feel a little short changed. That said, anyone have a recommendation for a decent one which I...

Fast Charger investment seems to be a happening...

When I bought my MG5 in early January I had no place to home charge and was hoping I could charge at local shops. The nearest chargers were over a mile away and usually have parking charges. So far I've done much of my charging for free at Tesco and Sainsbury's. Doing a full balance charge...

    Choosing a home fast charger

Choosing a home fast charger First and foremost: Any home charger will give the car a basic charge. However, all chargers are not equal. The charger needs to fit your needs. Things to consider: Do I need a home fast charger? In the UK, the MG ZS EV and MG 5 EV both come with a 13-amp 3-pin...
