I think the 4 has a similar function because the lines brighten on the driver's screen when they are detected. The nearside line is more difficult to detect a change and I don't know if the car believes the road edge is a lane marker.

This is 100% within MG's purview to fix. It's a case of chasing NCAP ratings for their sales/marketing value over a better and safer driving experience.

NCAP (and ANCAP here) are to blame as well.

They are now trotting out the classic blame shift line "It's not our fault manufacturer's are following the requirements to attain 5-star ratings"!

It would seem NCAP and ANCAP testing of LKA does not even involve driving the car on a real road. WTAF?

What a mess.

Or better still, as some manufacturers do, automatically disable until lines become clear enough again to get definitive reading, then re-enable .

This is exactly what my last car did. And steering adjustments if ever needed were more subtle and refined, not violent jerks.

Herself's Kia Eniro does exactly that and she never turns it off, and it never behaves erratically, just gives a slight nudge/resistance if you get too close to the line (and only where marking are clear)

My MY23 se sr does exactly that I never have to turn LKA off and it always behaves itself

I don't turn off the LKA either as it behaves itself too with just a slight nudge if I cross over the white line.
I've just checked my settings which the car remembers.

Listening to the ABC radio today there was a chat show about road trips and the best cars to do it it. Of course everyone had different ideas and the subject turned to LKA at one point. Just about every brand of newish ICE car came in for a bollocking about the LKA trying to kill them. Absolutely hilarious.

The main problem with all of this is that, the newer MG4 versions dont remember the last setting at start up, in our case we have everything on, except lane assist, as the default start up setting. Which is perfect. On a nice straight road / motorway, I press the cruise control button, and it then essentially drives itself, and when i need to, i press the brake and it goes back into normal mode. I understand that at the 1st service, they update the car, so lane assist defaults to on?, and then you have to faff around to switch it off! Quite why, is beyond me.

Because the stupid requirements to reach a five star safely rating or whatever. Which is unbelievable, as the car is more dangerous now.

Edit: LKA in my ZS Mk 1 is fine, I use it all the time. And it defaults to off. That's a 2021 model. I wonder where the change from helpful to homicidal occurred.

Professor Hannah Fry said that driver intervention when the AI aids give up was not good without special training. Robin Ince, I think it was, said that in the future cars will be useless as people realised the car would stop when it detected them so they would walk anywhere in the road stopping all the cars. Little do they know about the state of most driver aids!

The Euro NCAP site has videos of (fake) pedestrians and AEB for tested cars. The MG4 entry is here -the pedestrian tests start at about 2.20 in the video. I find it relaxing to watch the car getting smashed headfirst into a wall.

It's a product recall, the car has been recalled because it's unsafe. Like when the Honda Jazzes set on fire if you let the electric window buttons get wet. They all had to go back and get fixed.

It's the same here. The software in the car is so buggy that it is unsafe and needs the update. It's all under warranty but if you refuse to have the fix done then they aren't going to cover you.

So they release unsafe updates? Beggars belief really, doesn’t it? The thing that annoys me, is they update the previous unsafe update only to break something else and still the car is unsafe. As end users, we NEED the ability to disable what are really unsafe firmware systems like LKA, which in Norfolk is laughable. Our roads are wholly unsuitable for LKA 50% or more of the time.

Have you ever driven with LKA on and the car suddenly veers into a bus lane? Or the LKA keeps turning on and off because the markings on the road are bad?

Yes. I have had this issue numerous times, to the point I turn it off before driving.
Moved across the line to pass a parked car, tried pushing me into it.
Move into a central lane to turn right, pushed me back.
Moved to left side of narrow road as truck coming other way, nearly pushed me into its path.
It causes more dangerous situations than it will stop.
