Today my partner had a longer than expected drive and wanted to "brim the tank" before setting off using the 3 pin charger but despite being in charge for 8 hrs nothing happened.

Is there some trick to it we're unaware of?

Points (possibly) worth noting:

It was already at 80% when she plugged it in.

It was plugged in via an extension lead.

Any pointers much appreciated!

Hi, plug the extension lead in with the 'granny' EVSE connected then plug into the car, lock the car and it should charge. Make sure that there are no schedules or timers set in the car. Remove the 'charge to 80%' if it has been set

Cool, that's apparently not the way round she tried it so we'll give it a try in that order when we get chance.

Cheers!

.. I was under the impression that the pre-facelift MG5s didn’t facilitate scheduled charging or SOC limiting?

Therefore it should start charging straight away unless there is a problem with the car or charge point/granny charger…

Mine's on charge now, as the house battery was full and the solar is still putting out 1.5kw/hr, saving 'selling' the excess to Octopus for fourpence-ha'penny.

Basically as above... plug the charger in to car charge plug, switch on charger at the 3 pin socket and lock the car... reverse it when when you want to stop... When the charger is switched on, the 3 lights will be lit until the car is happy and then it shows just 2, power supply and charging. (This is the MG charger that came with the car.)

Mines on granny now and charging fine
connected the posted way
Got 1st service tomorrow so let’s see what happens after

Update - plugging the cable into the charger first then the car did the trick. I'm not sure why but her natural instinct was to do car then charger whereas mine would naturally be charged then car unless told otherwise.

When the car is locked and charging if you stand by the drivers door and press lock again on the key fob the dashboard will show you the charging status. I charge mine using a timer so that I can stop it when I calculate it will reach 80%

Be careful with extension leads. Unless they are laid out fairly straight heat will build up on a bend in the lead. Many leads explain the if on a reel the entire length should be off the reel if using appliances near the 13amp limit. Also ensure any plug in points are a tight fit and not made loose by continual insertion and removal of plugs.

It is a good idea to just feel the plug after 20 or 30 minutes as by that time any problem will be making the plug hot. Not slightly warm HOT.

Good shout. Now we know it works and gives a decent top-up (approx 25% charge) and will be using it quite a bit it'll possibly be worth upgrading the extension to something safer.

I've used my granny charger since my MG5 was new. At first with trepidation with all the bs on Youtube I would not leave it unattended. I bought a decent 5m cable and as I got cockier a decent timeswitch. Bulb got bought out and so at last I got a smart Smart Meter that works. So 75p every night on the 4 hour OctopusGo off peak window gets me a fullish charge for the weekend and all my daily use too.

Check out the Toughleads website:
they specialise in specific EV accessories using components correctly rated for the intended use. I use their extension lead, timer switch and EU adaptor, I can now relax safe in the knowledge it’s all top quality and nothing gets hot.

That is the best way forward, I went to an electrical wholesaler and told them what I needed an extension lead for and how much power it would take for long periods and I now have a 20ft extension lead with a waterproof connector. Before this an ordinary extension lead would get the 13amp plug very hot but now the plug barely gets warm.
I only use it when I'm away from home. I stayed at a Premier Inn last year and they did not have any ev charging there so I asked if I could charge with my lead out of the window of my room and they were fine by it.
