Honest review of the MG4 XPower

Nobody disputed what it showed .. just that when you come to use the car the chances of actually getting that range are infinitesimally small. :)

    I-Smart App

On my phone iSmart won't start if it detects a VPN running. 🤷‍♂️

    Service Reminder

Don't know about the MG5, but in my MG4 it is easy to reset and doing so sets the reminder to 15k miles - it doesn't set a time-based reminder from what I can see. So unless you do at least 15k miles within 12 months then the reminder may still be late anyway. 🤷‍♂️

    Noticed something today... Bluetooth

Do you use GMaps on the car screen? (i.e. using Android Auto). If yes then the AA connection will automatically make a Bluetooth connection. :)
  6. siteguru

Bluetooth - Am I missing something?

The problem (as I understand it) is that the MG4 may not use the same Bluetooth MAC address every time; if the MAC changes then the phone sees that as a different connection. So the problem is most likely not the phone but the software in the car. :) PS - it seems to be more of a Trophy spec...

    MG4 reliability

SORN relates to taxation - Vehicle Excise Duty. It has nothing to do with vehicle safety or roadworthiness. :) Very few cars which are written off will be kept by the owner and SORNed, to try and repair and bring back to life. Write offs are effectively scrapped and removed from the VED...

  19. siteguru

    MG4 reliability

I can't really explain it any differently ... it's about scale. The larger the sample size, the greater the probability of something occurring. Pro-rating doesn't apply linearly vs sample size. 🤷‍♂️

Catch up service to validate the Warranty

They can't say that, officially ... but I suspect some elements of the service regime may be more difficult for a non-MG service agent to perform; and how does the service get registered with MG? (Which is almost certainly a requirement to maintain the warranty).

    MG4 reliability

If there are, say, 10x as many ICE cars vs BEV cars, then there is a greater probability of an ICE car getting SORN than a BEV simply because there are so many more ICE cars. :) (I know you're talking ratios, but my point still stands. If there were as many BEVs as ICE cars then their SORN...

Catch up service to validate the Warranty

I'd agree that the (almost certain) lack of warranty, and their deception regarding it, are key reasons to reject the car for a full refund - I know a warranty isn't the Be All and End All, but with an EV the last thing you want to lose is the battery warranty. Whilst the chances of the battery...

For further clarification ... the From Start meter resets after the car has been switched off for over an hour (or so, I'm not sure of the exact elapsed time), and the From Last Charge should reset each time you charge the car (but sometimes doesn't). Joke thread

A wife calls a garage to ask for advice on topping up engine oil. They tell her how to remove and clean the dipstick and push it in again (then out) to check the level. She does this and they confirm the oil needs topping up. They then tell her to remove the OIL cap and pour in some oil from...

DC Fast Charging Not Working, Only Type 2 AC Charging

Terms which impose a potential liability must be clear and obvious, and brought to the consumer's attention. And that's what it is not very good at ... it'll maintain your target speed, or the speed of the vehicle in front (if slower). But between those points it is harsh on the accelerator and harsh on the regen/brakes - it doesn't "look ahead" very well, it is almost a binary system. (Maybe the new...
  36. siteguru

    Next Car?

True, and so do I - but the question was about how to increase mpkWh .. ACC is not very efficient in the MG4 :)
  37. siteguru

    Say Hello

So which is it then? Both statements can't be right. 🤷‍♂️ (When I mentioned 4WD in Snow mode, or lack thereof, I meant permanent 4WD .. engaging 4WD when you put your foot down is utterly pointless, as you shouldn't be doing that in snowy/icy conditions).
  38. siteguru

    Charging to 100% How?

Bear in mind also that the charge limit "slider" doesn't actually slide (AFAIK) .. you have to tap it to change the target level (in 10% increments I think).
  39. siteguru

MG4 door locking is a useful feature. MG4 as a taxi.

@nexia201 here does (did?) use his as a taxi in Malta. :)

  41. siteguru

    Say Hello

Bear in mind that the 4WD of the XPower may not do what you think .. if you need 4WD on the basis of traction at lower speeds then the XPower only engages 4WD permanently in Sport drive mode; it doesn't even do it in Snow mode (as far as I am aware) which seems an opportunity missed.

    Air bag turned off

I haven't said mine doesn't have it; merely that I've never looked. ;) @rmpalo's car is new, and they've replied that the control is now a soft switch rather than a physical switch. :)

  45. siteguru

    Cruise Control does not "nudge"

A 2024 reg car should have had its first service well before now ... it is 12 months or 15k miles, whichever comes first. If it hasn't then the MG warranty is almost certainly void.
  46. siteguru

    Air bag turned off

You know what? I've never looked at mine, so I've no idea whether that switch is even there. 🤔

  48. siteguru

    Charging to 100% How?

    Charge calculations NMC

Look at your charge port .. if there are metal pins in the L2 and L3 holes then your car (probably) supports 3-phase charging. This means, when using a single phase EVSE (such as almost all of us with home charge points will have) the car binds 2 of the charger phases together - which means that...

Assuming you don't have an early Trophy model with 3-phase charging then your single phase onboard charger is rated to 6.6kW .. in my car the iSmart app generally reports 6.5kW going into the car whilst the Wallbox app reports 7.1kW, so 600W loss, or 91.5% charging efficiency. On your Trophy...

I've not noticed anything negative with it so far. The only observation I have is that R38 would default to the MG Pilot (2nd) tab when you pressed the Car icon; R45 defaults to the 1st tab. So I now have an additional tap when using the car, because I always turn off LKA audible alerts. :)

(Your MG4 won't be 4 years old ... 3.5 years at most) ;) But yes - speed is a big factor in overall efficiency, as drag change is proportional to the square of the speed change. (e.g. double your speed and the drag will be 4x higher).

  160. siteguru

UK Owners - How many miles are you getting on a full charge?

The predicted range is effectively calculated based on your Accumulated Total miles/kWh x your current SoC (based on your battery pack size and SoH). So if your miles/kWh says 3, and your 100% capacity is 50kWh then your 100% range would be 150 miles. In my SE SR this seems to pretty much...

  170. siteguru

    MG4 Software Update Thread

Given that this model was quoted as having a 49kWh pack in the refreshed versions, vs the 51kWh (50.8kWh usable) ... I doubt that they fitted a different battery pack; perhaps the software interface changed so that the 0.2kWh buffer became a 2kWh buffer. :)

    MG4 Software Update Thread

I should add ... whilst the SOH is reported as 90.66%, I'm not experiencing any noticeable reduction in actual range across the 3 winters I've had this car. I've certainly not lost almost 10% of real-world range.
  172. siteguru

    MG4 Software Update Thread

For an LFP pack it's not that surprising ... after 1 year (actually 1.25 years from build) it was ~96%, after 2 years it was ~93%, after 3 years it was ~91%. So 90.66% now is pretty much as expected ... at the 4th service I suspect it'll be about 90%.

Bear in mind that the Excite (SE over here) does not have separate LKA and ELK - it's all one system. (i.e. it appears as Lane Keep Assist in the menus; there is no separate ELK setting as I believe there is in the Trophy spec, or whatever it is called over there).
