Diagnostic VDI, VNCI, MDI with MG4

Is it an MG branded granny charger, or a 3rd party one? Are those other cars MGs?

(If the granny is a 3rd party one then there's an outside chance that the resistor value between the GND and CP pins [I think] might be such a value that your MG5 can't work out what to do with it). 🤷‍♂️

Complete newbie here... got my secondhand MG4 Trophy today.

I am unfamiliar with lots of the acronyms etc. but am fairly tech savvy so would like to attempt to upgrade.

Can anyone clarify - do I need anything other than a USB stick with the software loaded on it in order to update to a later firmware? - I saw a mention of a step 7 updating something using SIPS so not quite sure?...
Think I'm on R30 at the moment but would like to move to a later release.

Welcome to the forum.

Yes. For most firmware updates, you need a laptop and a dongle to plug into the OBD port in the car.

Also, apart from a very few cases, you will need a subscription to MG's servers to download various files. See the first post of this thread for some relevant links.

Edit: It seems that the dongle doesn't have to be corded, some use WiFi.

Currently hating life, got the VNCI cable, been all day in my car for about 5 hours trying to get the IPK to program in and it keeps failing. So at the moment I have no instrument cluster, just keeps failing, and it's such a slow install, 1% a minute.
